5 Affordable Summer Fun Ideas
Today is the last day of school for students around here which means that summer is on! I think it might be a bit scary for parents because now they have a stretch of weeks where they have to keep the kids entertained. And doing that might seem like an expensive task. But some of our favorite things to do are affordable summer fun ideas too!
1. Get outside!
Grabbing ball or a bat and just heading out to the backyard is one of W’s favorite summer activities. And it’s absolutely free! If we go out early in the day, we don’t have to worry about the heat much yet. He sometimes lets me relax a bit while I throw him a ball or he rides one of his cars around the yard.
I find it relaxing and have caught some of my favorite moments with my camera just by letting him go outside and play. No plans, just free play time!
2. Splash time!
Our new inflatable pool has been a huge hit already! I got the generously sized pool for under $10, making it a great way to have affordable family fun. It’s actually big enough for a few kids at a time or even for me to get in and play with W. It will be a nice way to cool off without having to pay for a pool membership or even pay for a neighborhood pool pass!
3. Bubbles everywhere!
Bubbles are a favorite around our house no matter what season it is! I love how cheap they are in the summer time and that we can even use them on rainy days. Actually, I love that we can use them on rainy days because those are some of the most challenging in the summer! But I can break out a bottle of bubbles and we have instant entertainment!
4. We’re scavenger hunting!
Scavenger hunts are also great for both getting outside or staying indoors. You can pick out some little toys or other items from around the house to use as the treasures and then create the clues. Older kids can help create clues too! It becomes more about the actual hunt and less about the prize at the end. And it’s definitely affordable if you use things from around your house!
5. Go on a Picnic!
Picnics are a great way to change up those dog days of summer. Picnics can be as elaborate or as simple as you want them to be. And the kids have to eat, right? So the only money spent is money that would be spent on food for lunch or dinner anyway. Yes, you can even turn dinner into a picnic and you don’t have to limit yourself to sandwiches and chips!
We enjoyed a picnic dinner on our back deck the other night after I made an easy 3 Bean and Franks bake inspired by a recipe I found on the Hebrew National website! It was so easy to make and would also be great for summer cookouts!
