5 Holiday Mistakes You Might Make as a Parent
This is a busy time of year for the whole family. As a parent, you might feel like you have too much on your plate. It’s easy to fall into some holiday mistakes because you have such a long to do list.
Here are a few that I’ve been guilty of over the past few years. (And let’s be honest, this year too.)
1. Using Santa as a Threat
I don’t remember doing this as much with Weston and I still don’t do it much. But with Carrigan I’ve found myself using Santa as a threat. She might not realize that no matter how sassy she is, there will still be presents under the tree on Christmas Day. And what am I going to do on December 26th when I don’t have that to use anymore? It’s really just not a good tool so I’m trying to avoid it this week.
2. Shopping, Shopping, and More Shopping
If you’re like me, then you might still be worrying about having enough gifts. In a few days, you’ll worry about having gone overboard. Deep breath. You’ve done a great job this year. It will all be fine.
Instead of spending your time shopping in the days before Christmas, think about spending more time with your family. Bake cookies with the kids or do something crafty. These are the memories that will last a lot longer than any gift under the tree this year.
3. Saying Yes Too Many Times
With so many different invites to spend time with friends and family, it’s so each to over commit. Spreading the family too thin is so easy to do this time of year. It’s one of the easiest holiday mistakes to make! You want to spend time with everyone but if you wear everyone out, you might find out just how the holidays feel when everyone is overtired and overemotional.
Don’t be afraid to say no.
4. So Many Traditions, So Little Time
Another thing you can’t be afraid to say no to is all of those Christmas plans you are making in your head right now. Busy family life means that you have to just roll with the punches. The holiday season is no exception to this.
I know you want the perfect Christmas, but no matter how many traditions you squeeze in (or don’t squeeze in), as long as you have a good time, your kids will have a great time too! They follow our lead more than we’d probably like to admit.
5. It’s All in the Details
I’m not talking about perfectly hung stockings or holiday cookies beautifully decorated. I’m talking about things like batteries. One of the biggest holiday mistakes we can make as parents is forgetting to include things like batteries with the gifts!
My mother-in-law is amazing with this. She always includes batteries with the gifts she gives if they need them! She is my gift-giving hero in this respect!
So don’t get caught commiting this holiday mistake! Check all of the gifts as you wrap them up and make sure you have all the batteries you need on hand! If you happen to forget, at least you can know that you’re not alone!
Energizer found out that 90% of Americans have forgotten to buy batteries for holiday gifts! This might make those little details one of the most common holiday mistakes! 54% of parents end up having to run out and buy batteries at the last minute too! I’ll admit that I’ve sent Justin to do that on Christmas Day before!
Since that happened, we’ve been stocking up on Energizer® batteries! Energizer MAX® is one of our favorites because they provide long-lasting power and leak protection which is wonderful for kids toys and other high-tech gadgets we might be gifting this year!
Energizer Max AA and AAA batteries (also known as the ones we never seem to have enough of around our house) are designed to protect toys and devices from damaging leaks for up to two years after the battery is fully used. They also hold power for up to 10 years while in storage! This is great when the kids get out a gift from the closet in the middle of summer and fully expect it to work just as well as when they opened it on Christmas Day!
