So let’s cut to the chase and chat about something that might have made me a little giddy when I first got my itinerary for the Zootopia press event — the Jason Bateman interview. I can’t be the only mom my age who thinks that sounds pretty cool. Not only is he an actor I’ve watched and enjoyed for years, he’s a father so I was excited to get his take on his work in Disney’s Zootopia.
A Dad’s Take on Zootopia: Jason Bateman Interview
If you didn’t know, Jason Bateman voices Nick Wilde, one of the main characters in the movie. He’s the scam artist fox that Judy Hopps has to team up with to crack her first case. Yes, a bunny has to team up with a fox. What good can come from that, right?
I was definitely interested to get Jason’s take on that whole situation. But the first thing I noticed during the interview was how some of his body language, gestures, and facial expressions reminded me of Nick Wilde! Even though animation happens way after the voice work Jason had done, he was filmed and clearly animators brought a little bit of the actor behind the voice into the creation of Nick Wilde.
Pretty cool, right?
But now that I’m done fan girling a bit over this Jason Bateman interview, here’s a bit of his take on Disney’s Zootopia as a father!
He mentioned that he loved working on Zootopia, because unlike a lot of his other work, it’s a movie that he can take his daughters too. And that gave him a real sense of pride. He’s right about being able to take the kids! It’s a great family friendly film that has a little something for everyone!
Being a Brave Parent
Jason shared that he understood the reaction Judy Hopps’ parents have when she heads off to the big city of Zootopia, he hopes that when it’s time for his daughters to go out on their own, he won’t be paralyzed with fear. He’s working every day to prepare them to be able to navigate the world successfully while also preparing himself to be able to let them go.
As a parent, I think we can all relate to this on some level whether we have babies or teenagers. There’s definitely prep for all of us to do for ourselves and our kids!
Zootopia as a Parenting Tool
Jason mentioned that he loves that Zootopia is a film that he can use to address some real issues with his daughters. Themes like discrimination, racism, fear, and others are addressed in the amazingly smart story of the residents of Zootopia. The animal characters and setting make it a great way to bring up some of these things in a way that kids can really understand.
Zootopia is a great family film that gives you plenty to talk about later. And it really felt like Jason was thrilled to be a part of it all.
Oh, and in case you were wondering, when we asked about Nick Wilde’s favorite color, Jason Bateman decided it was green. Green like cash, right? I thought it was a pretty good answer! (Oh and we got to all take a photo with him! Yes, that’s me in the back row, next to Jason Bateman on the left!)
If you haven’t already, be sure to check out the Zootopia trailer! The movie opens on March 4th in theaters everywhere! We’ll be going to see it as a family and you should too!
