I’ll admit when I think of Aflac the first thing that comes to mind is that familiar duck. Aflac! Definitely an attention grabber. But once you get past the duck and the voice, insurance is something extremely important.
I feel blessed to have insurance for my family. Even when open enrollment comes around and I have to sit down and figure out what coverages we need for the upcoming year. At the end of each school year we have a meeting outlining changes to our insurance options at school. To be honest, it usually feels like we’re just going through the motions. I never feel more prepared after it.
Aflac discovered that I’m not alone in that feeling! Aflac did a survey and discovered that the majority of employees felt like their employer didn’t communicate well with them during insurance open enrollment period. And many employees ended up staying with the same providers and coverages year after year!
It can end up being a costly mistake!
Common Benefits Mistakes
I decided to take a look at some of the most common mistakes employees, including:
- 61% of consumers are only sometimes or not at all aware of changes that may be made to their policies each year
- 89% elect the same benefits options every year
- 47% of consumers rarely or never exceeded deductible costs
- Only 16% actually contribute the right amount to their flexible spending accounts
Taking the time to research and learn about the supplemental policies offered by companies like Aflac can really make a difference in your family’s finances. Year after year I have debated opting in to some disability insurance that offers coverage during pregnancy. Each year we sit down and look at the finances of it all to make our decision.
Aflac has put together an infographic to help families get a jumpstart on making more educated decisions during the open enrollment period. You can check it out and be more prepared to get the coverage your family needs!
How do you decide on the insurance coverage for your family?
