Back to School Routines That We’ve Stuck With
As I’ve mentioned recently, Weston started kindergarten this year and Carrigan started preschool. So it was really back to school season for us! I was all about figuring out what back to school routines might work well for us. Like usual, I had a ton of ideas. But now that we’re a few weeks into the school year, there are some really practical back to school routines that are the ones we’ve actually stuck with.
One thing the past few weeks have taught me is that bedtime routine is one of the back to school routines that really matters for us!
It’s all about getting things done the night before around here. And this mom doesn’t want to do it all alone, so I’ve added things like picking out clothes and making lunches to our bedtime routine! Now they’re chores we do together as we prepare for bed. We make lunches then hit the bath tub before picking out pajamas and clothes for the next day. Story time together and then bed!
That means once the kids are in their beds, lunches are already made which means I can use that time for other things!
Morning To Do List
Even though there isn’t as much to do in the morning since we take care of as much as we can the night before, I’ve found it’s a lot easier to have a checklist of things to do. It helps Weston do more independently while I help Carrigan get ready for the day.
I’ve seen some great ideas out there to help with time management in the morning. You can hand write a to do list, print a checklist off the web, or even buy a cheap clock that you can use permanent markers to color on so your child knows how much time they have to get things done.
Some of the things we have on our morning to do list include:
- Brush teeth
- Get dressed
- Brush hair
- Eat breakfast
- Take vitamins
- Put lunch in backpack
- Put on shoes
It’s a simple list but it’s made even easier with things like simple breakfast options (granola bars, breakfast sandwiches, cereal cups) and vitamins that the kids enjoy taking!
Around here, I know that we have to start working on developing habits from the start. So it’s been best for us to start the school year on track with quality healthy habits.
I’ve used Nature Made® products for years so it only made sense to start a lifetime of healthy habits with my kids using a brand that has worked great for me. Plus, we were able to pick them up at Target when we were shopping for other school items which made it super convenient too! You know I’m all about convenient.
What makes these work for us is that the kids don’t hesitate to take them in the morning. They are happy to take a vitamin and that makes our morning that much easier!
Kids can enjoy getting the essential daily nutritional support they may be lacking, in a delicious, easy-to-chew gummy. Nature Made® KIDS FIRST® Multivitamin Gummies come in great-tasting all- natural fruit flavors that kids love, like Orange, Cherry & Mixed Berry. Not only do they taste great, they help fill many of the key nutrient gaps from kids’ diet and support overall health.†
- Good source of fiber
- All-natural fruit flavors

So our Nature Made® KIDS FIRST® have become part of our morning routine before we head out the door and it makes me feel good to be starting them off on the right foot from a young age!
So far we haven’t had a lot of homework besides reading together and practicing writing Weston’s name with all lowercase letters. But I make sure that anything that needs to get done, gets done right when he gets home. Otherwise we get involved in other evening things and it might not happen.
I put together a box of extra school supplies that are just for at home and we keep them separate from all of our other craft and art supplies. That way we’re always prepared. I also go through his folder and sign it as soon as he gets home. It gets put right back into his backpack so there’s no hunting for it in the morning!
So my advice when it comes to back to school routines is to keep it simple, figure out what works, and stick to them! And be sure to pick up Nature Made® KIDS FIRST® Multivitamin Gummies on your next trip to Target! If you’re like me, you’re there at least once a week getting things you need to make it through another week of school!
