Behind the Scenes with Rogue One Director Gareth Edwards
While at Lucasfilm HQ in San Francisco for the Rogue One press event, we have the amazing opportunity to interview Rogue One Director Gareth Edwards. Any time I get the chance to be part of an interview with the director of a film, I feel lucky. I love learning more about movies from the minds behind the magic.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story follows a group of unlikely heroes in a time of conflict who band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.
More About the Rogue One Experience
We heard from most of the actors how the set of Rogue One was a collaborative work environment so we had to ask Gareth Edwards about it. He explained to us that you have to let the organic process in or you limit the film. I’m so thankful he didn’t let anything limit this movie!
When it came to casting, he also explained that he really tried not to think ahead but as you talk about the characters, it becomes challenging if you don’t have an idea of what they look like. So that leads to chats about certain people. Ben Mendelsohn as Direct Orson Krennic is an example of this!
Both director Gareth Edwards and one of the producers thought he would be perfect for the role and brought the idea to each other! Yes, they came up with it separately! Apparently they were on the same wavelength and luckily, Ben Mendelsohn is a big Star Wars fan so he was on board!
My favorite thing that he shared was the the cast and crew became like a ban of rebels while filming. They were willing to try things that aren’t usual during the filming. One example is how at the end of a day of filming they would have playground time. So they would all just keep filming and play around.
Some of that footage even made it into the trailers for the film!
Fun fact! Everyone wants a cameo in a Star Wars film! Gareth Edwards has one (along with a few other faces you might recognize) so keep your eyes peeled!
