With Disneynature’s MONKEY KINGDOM opening in theatres everywhere this Friday, there’s a few things you should know about the latest adventure into the animal kingdom. It’s more than just a journey into the jungles of South Asia, it’s also the story of a family. And it’s a story many of us will totally get.
Disneynature’s Monkey Kingdom Family
When I found out that I would be screening Disneynature’s Monkey Kingdom on my recent visit to San Francisco, I was thrilled. I’d seen the trailers and the antics of the macaque monkeys combined with the lush jungle, stone carvings, and ancient structures of their home had me hooked.
And I wasn’t disappointed. I loved that at the heart of the story in Monkey Kingdom was a family that seemed to have fallen apart but then was able to make a better life for themselves together. It wasn’t the story I expected and it was very cool to see happen with a group of animals.
Meet the Monkey Kingdom Family
- Monkey Kingdom follows Maya, a macaque monkey, at the bottom of the totem pole. She’s an underdog. I think we can all relate to feeling like the underdog.
- You’ll meet Kip, Maya’s son. And the reason Maya takes on what seems like an impossible challenge — to make a better life for her son in the face of adversity. It’s a challenge and a love that many parents experience.
- And then there’s the Sisterhood. A trio of females who we might recognize as the popular girls. Many of us dealt with thm growing up and perhaps even in our lives as adults. It’s interesting to see what they are really made of when push comes to shove.
- Last but not least is Kumar, a young male full of ambition. He might seem like the hero of the story but this story is more about Maya. What Kumar proves to be is a wonderful role model for his son, Kip.
So when you take your family to see the latest from Disneynature, you’ll also be taking them to see the story of a family not unlike your own or ones that you know. And there is something really powerful about that.
It just shows how similar families are, no matter where they live or what species they are!
While Monkey Kingdom is rated G making it a great movie for the family, there is also something else that you can do just by snagging your tickets.
If you see Monkey Kingdome opening week (April 17th-23rd), Disneynature will make a donation in your honor to Conservation International to help protect monkeys and other endangered species in their natural habitats!
