It’s cold and sore throat season around our house. I’m thankful we seem to stay fairly healthy during the winter but there’s just something about sore throats that seems to get all of us at least once each winter. My kids are masters at runny noses and coughs, and they often pass them on to me. Plus, the busier I am, the more likely I am to find myself under the weather. Luckily there are some sore throat remedies that I’ve come to depend on to get me through the busy days. This mom can’t take many days off and I know I’m not alone!
Easy Sore Throat Remedies for Busy Parents
For me, the key to sore throat remedies is that they work and that they are easy! I don’t have time to be done with a sore throat.
Our first step around here is doing our best to prevent the colds that lead to sore throats. Here’s how I do that:
- Wash hands often with soap and water.
- Get enough sleep.
- Exercise regularly.
- Make healthy, balanced eating choices.
- Keep stress low.
It’s not always as easy as it sounds so when a cold catches up with me and I find myself with a sore throat, I turn to the sore throat remedies that have worked well for me in the past!
So what do I do when I wake up with that pain and scratchiness in my throat and mouth?
Steam in the Shower
Steam is one of the best ways to ease a sore throat, especially late at night or first thing in the morning. It also makes it easier to breathe if I’m all congested.
So I close the bathroom door and turn on the hot water in the shower for a few minutes before I hop in. Sitting in the bathroom surrounded by the steam is super easy and sometimes is all I need to help ease that sore throat and get my day started.
Classic Cup of Tea
A cup of hot tea is another of my favorite sore throat remedies. It’s easy to make in the morning, mid-afternoon, or before bed. In the winter, I love a hot cup of tea with my breakfast. And when my throat is bugging me, it’s one of the most soothing drinks. Adding some local honey makes it even better. My favorite varieties are Earl Gray, Chamomile, and citrus flavors.
Gargle with Salt Water
This is one of the sore throat remedies from my childhood. I can remember my Nana having me do it when I was visiting her as a child. It’s always one of Grambo’s suggestions when we have sore throats now. So I guess it’s one that has been passed down through the family but it really does seem to help ease the discomfort!
Gargling with salt water really helps clear out the mucous and ease my sore throat pain. So it’s a keeper and one I’m sure I’ll pass down to my kids as well!
Chloraseptic® lozenges and sprays
And when the going gets rough, I’m always thankful that we have our medicine cabinet stocked with Chloraseptic® lozenges and sprays.
I’ve always depending on Chloraseptic® sprays for targeted pain relief. Plus it’s the #1 pharmacist recommended brand for sore throat liquids/sprays. And I’m definitely a fan of the new cherry flavor.
Recently, the Chloraseptic® lozenges have become a staple in my purse. They are great for soothing my nasal passages and helping suppress my cough when we’re out and about. So we keep our medicine cabinet stocked!
So don’t be caught unprepared this winter! Be ready to tackle that sore throat with these easy sore throat remedies and get on with busy day! It’s not easy to call in sick as a parent!
