4 Easy Ways to Spend More Time with Family
Summer is here and that means family life slows down just a bit for us. Well, slows down might not be the right way to describe it. The schedule just changes without school taking up most of the weekdays. That means I’m always looking for easy ways to spend more time with family during the summer months.
It might seem so simple but it’s easy to get caught up in play dates, summer camp, pool parties and more. Learning how to spend more time with family during the summer actually takes some planning here!
Of course, with a few easy ideas, I make sure that we make the most of our summer time together!
Avoid Summer Brain Drain and Bond with a Book
Summer can set kids back a bit in school when it comes to the momentum they’ve hit by the end of the year. As a former teacher, I’ve seen how simply continuing to read together all summer can make a difference when the new school year rolls around.
So one habit we’ve vowed to keep up with is reading with the kids each night. It’s part of our bedtime routine and it’s the perfect way to protect time with the kids. When it comes to figuring out how to spend more time with your family, mornings and evenings are a great time to plan a few simple things like sharing a book.
Ways to Spend More Time with Family #1: Read a book together at the end of the busy day.
Enjoy the Summer Mornings and Evenings
One of the best parts of summer is the weather. Even if Texas, summer is amazing. Sure it gets pretty hot and humid but the mornings and the evenings are usually pretty amazing.
There’s just something about a bright summer morning or the warmth of the evening that just makes me feel really nostalgic. How to spend more time with kids in the summer is pretty easy — just take them outside! It’s really that simple. There doesn’t have to be any elaborate planning either.
Just grab a ball to play with, go for walk around the neighborhood, draw with chalk, ride bikes, or any other simple activity! Block out even ten minutes together. Keep it simple and just spend time together. You’ll be left with some amazing memories.
Ways to Spend More Time with Family #2: Get outside together every single day. Even for a few minutes!
Plan an Easy Family Dinner
One thing we seem to get more of in the summer is dinner time. Without sports practice or games, it seems a lot easier to sit down and have a meal together.
But in the summer, I’m also less likely to want to spend a ton of time in the kitchen preparing meals. It’s true, I’ll admit it. I always want meals to be easy to make, but in the summer I want it to be even easier. I guess I want a vacation too. So we eat a lot of sandwiches or Justin grills.
We also do pizza probably once a week. It’s a meal I can count on everyone to eat. When I’m focusing on how to spend more time with family, a meal they all love (that is easy for me) is the key to reaching that goal!
Tuesdays are usually our pizza dinner tonight together. Every Tuesday, you can get any large pizza (a specialty off the menu or a custom with up to five toppings) for just $10.
If you add a salad, cookie dough, or another side, you can put together a great meal for the family for less than $20!
Papa Murphy’s is dedicated to bringing families together through food people love. That makes their fresh take ‘n bake pizza a perfect addition to our summertime together as a family.
We can personalize our pizzas to make sure even the kids will eat dinner! I love that everything that goes into Papa Murphy’s pizza (from the dough to the mozzarella and veggies) is prepared fresh each day! It’s an easy way to make family dinner happen!

Go on a Local Adventure Together
One thing we do like to do with our bit of extra time we have together in the summer is exploring. You can spend time planning something elaborate, but mostly we just choose a day and a place. It could be something bigger like a water park or the zoo. But it’s usually just a local park we’ve never been to before.
When it comes to ways to spend more time with family, it’s mostly about committing to protect that time together. So we block out one day a week or one weekend a month and just go out exploring our little area and trying new things! That’s how we discovered that we all love painting pottery!

Ways to Spend More Time with Family #4: Explore what the area you live in has to offer! Do it together!
If you’re pondering how to spend more time with your family this summer, just keep it simple. Commit to making time together, write it on the calendar, and do it!
Don’t worry about big plans, just enjoy each other and the slightly slower pace of summertime!
