Friday Five: 5 Kid-Friendly Thanksgiving Cookies Recipes

Halloween is behind us which means Thanksgiving will be here in just a few short weeks. I love making cookies throughout the holiday season and since W was born, I’ve found myself searching for cookie recipes that are more kid-friendly. One thing I looked for in these recipes are cookies that used some premade products such as refrigerated or store-bought cookies and then turned them in to something special!

5 Kid-Friendly Thanksgiving Recipes

Turkey Sugar Cookies1. Turkey Sugar Cookies

What you need:
1  roll (16.5 oz) Pillsbury® refrigerated sugar cookies
1  container (16 oz) chocolate creamy frosting
Candy corn
Orange decorating icing
Black decorating gel
Miniature candy-coated chocolate baking bits

What to do:
Heat oven to 350°F. Bake the sugar cookies as directed on packaging. Allow cookies to cool completely (approximately 20 minutes).
Spoon chocolate frosting into a resealable plastic bag and seal the bag. Cut a small hole in bottom corner of bag. On each cookie, pipe frosting along the outer edge of half of cookie. Arrange candy corn over frosting for feathers.
Pipe orange icing onto each cookie to resemble a turkey’s face and feet. Use orange icing to attach baking bits to turkey face for eyes. Pipe black gel on baking bits for centers of eyes.

What you need:
1 cup vanilla frosting
7 drops yellow food coloring
32 miniature peanut butter cups
1 package (11-1/2 ounces) fudge-striped cookies
32 pieces orange mini Chiclets gum (Tic Tac candies would work as well)

What to do:
In a small bowl, combine the frosting and food coloring. Remove paper wrappers from the peanut butter cups. Then, while holding the bottom of a peanut butter cup, dip the top in the yellow frosting. Position the peanut butter cup over center hole on the bottom of cookie, to form the hatband and crown. Add one piece of gum to create the buckle. Repeat with remaining peanut butter cups and cookies.

What you need:
Hershey Kisses
Mini Nilla Wafers

What to do:
Put a small amount of frosting on the bottom of the Nilla Wafer and place the cookie on the bottom of the Hershey Kiss. Add a dab of frosting to the top. Yes, it’s that simple!

Candy Cookie Turkey4. Candy & Cookie Turkeys

What you need:
Nutter Butter Cookies
M&M minis (you just need the brown ones!)
White cookie icing
Red Jelly Belly jellybeans
Yellow Jelly Belly jellybeans
Candy Corn
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
Nabisco Famous Chocolate Wafers (Fudge Striped cookies could be substituted)

What to do:
Take the Nabisco Wafer and “glue” it to the peanut butter cup using the cookie icing. Make sure you line them up edge to edge as shown in the photo. This will be the back of your turkey. Apply some icing (aka “glue”) along the top of the peanut butter cup. Attach 6 candy corn for the feathers. Use some more “glue” and attach the base of the Nutter Butter to the peanut butter cup.

Now it’ s time for the face! Apply icing to the front top half of the Nutter Butter in a “puffy T” shape. Then, attach two brown M&M Minis for the eyes. Attach the yellow Jelly Belly directly under the eyes for the beak. Directly under the beak, attach the red Jelly Belly for the gobbler.

Apply a generous strip of icing down the middle of the second Nabisco Wafer. Now, set the bottom of the turkey on top of the icing and hold for a few seconds to allow the icing to firm up. This will serve as the base for the turkey. Attach the two orange Jelly Bellys on the iced area at the bottom to create the feet. Then allow the turkeys to sit out for a bit until the icing is firm.

What you need:

Oreo cookies (double stuff work well)

Peanut Butter Cups

Candy Corn

Pretzel Sticks

Melted white chocolate (you can also try white decorating frosting)

Black and red decorating frosting

Lollipop sticks

What to do:

Break the pretzel sticks into small pieces (approximately 1 inch) and set aside. Take the Oreos apart carefully and place the pretzel sticks and 5 pieces of candy corn on the side of the Oreo with the filling. Also place your lollipop stick between the two pretzels. Then melt your white chocolate (or vanilla almond bark) and use it to glue the cookie back together. This is a far less frustrating way to make these although you can also try just pushing the pretzels and candy into the creme filling without taking apart the cookie. These will be the legs and the feathers of your turkey.

Squeeze a small amount of the melted chocolate or white decorating frosting onto the center of the Oreo. Press your peanut butter cup down on top of the cookie. The chocolate acts as the glue to hold it all together. Dot on some eyes using the chocolate or frosting and add pupils with the black decorating frosting.

Then cut the yellow end off of a piece of candy corn and use your chocolate to glue it onto the turkey’s face for a beak. Create a gobbler using the red decorating frosting. Add a ribbon as a nice decorative touch!
