A few weeks ago I discovered that I am not alone in my appreciate of gift cards when it comes to holiday shopping. According to a new survey by the National Retail Federation,, the number one gift choice for consumers this holiday season is gift cards. 57.7 % of shoppers say they’d like to receive a gift card over clothing or clothing accessories (50.0%), consumer electronics or computer-related accessories (35.4%) and jewelry (22.8%). I am definitely in that 57.7%! I love getting gift cards for holiday gifts because they come in handy when I’m doing post-holiday shopping! Yes, I love shopping the post-holiday sales! Who’s with me on that one? Anyone else brave the craziness after the holidays! I love paying with gift cards because I feel like I’m getting even better deals!
One of my favorite parts of choosing gift cards is choosing how to give them! I will admit that I often pick out a cute card and slip the gift card in the card. At our house, I like to put the card envelopes in the Christmas tree but they cannot be opened until Christmas day! I also love some of the adorable gift card holders I see in the stores and if I see some that I really love then I might be willing to pay a little extra for a cute little stocking or gift box.
This year, two of my students who are siblings gave me a gift card and I loved the way their mother did it! She designed the holiday card (that was complete with adorable photos of the kids) to leave a space at the bottom where she could attach the gift card! I was extremely surprised when I opened the gift because I thought it was just going to be a Christmas card and instead there was a gift card framed by photos of adorable smiling faces. It definitely warmed my heart and not just because I love gift cards. It was a very sweet way to present a gift that isn’t as big as others wrapped in bags and boxes.
I know some people aren’t huge fans of gift cards because they don’t think they are as thoughtful but some people (such as J) love gift cards because it allows them to get gifts that might not be available until later in the year! So, I think if you are creative in your presentation, you can make gift cards into amazing gifts this holiday season!
