As a teacher, I am very familiar with Texas Instruments. I have been using their graphing calculators since I was in high school because they were required for my honors math classes. I still have my Texas Instruments graphing calculator from high school and with a few new batteries every so often, it still works great! I used it through college and still use it from time to time although I don’t do any graphing with it anymore! Still, technology has come a long way since I first got my graphing calculator! As a teacher, I know the older students are still using Texas Instruments graphing calculators so when I got the opportunity to try one of the newest TI handheld calculators, I jumped at the chance!
The TI-Nspire CX handheld uses color to help students “see” different learning approaches and work on interactive animated lessons to highlight critical math and science concepts. It’s designed for middle school, high school, and college students. My first impression? This calculator makes me want to go take a math class where I could use it!
TI-Nspire CX handheld is part of the TI-Nspire CX Family of Color Graphing Calculators and Software. The TI-Nspire CX handheld features some amazing features including:
- Full Color. The TI-Inspire CX features a full-color, backlit display. This helps students make faster, stronger connections between equations, graphs and geometric representations on-screen.
- Real-word Images. You can use images to overlay and color-code math and science concepts. This helps students of all ages discover real-world connections.
- Rechargable. The TI-Nspire Rechargeable Battery, installed with the handheld, is expected to last up to two weeks of normal use on a single charge. No alkaline batteries are needed for this calculator!
- 3-D Graphing. Graph and rotate (manually and automatically) 3-D functions. You can also change the wire or surface color of your 3-D graph.
Despite the fact that I was completely WOWed by the color display and how motivating it makes math, there is another amazing feature that is possibly my most favorite feature of the TI-Nspire CX handheld. You can transfer assignments from the handheld to your computer! I love the functionality of the software on this graphing calculator as well as the fact that it is approved for many exams!
Everything you need to get started is in the box including the handheld and rechargeable battery, the software, wall adaptor, USB cable, and a unit-to-unit cable. It has everything you need to get started! Although this may not be the most exciting holiday gift idea, it is definitely a practical one for the student who needs a graphing calculator. If I needed one, I would love to have this one!
You can purchase the TI-Nspire CX handheld on the Texas instruments website for $165 or find a retailer near you. I also found it on Amazon for $139.20 and it qualifies for FREE Super Saver Shipping!
