Before I had kids, I already had a plan for how I would dress my children for school. It involved shopping at my favorite store and buying one of everything from the collection of matching pieces for the season. Yes, over the years and many shopping trips at Target, I’d noticed that each season they offered a collection of tops and bottoms that mixed and matched together perfectly. I loved the idea for a number of reasons.
Now that I have kids, they don’t always go along with my plans but back to school shopping at Target is one thing that has worked out well for us. So now we face the important issue of how to choose a first day of school outfit! So exciting!
How to Choose a First Day of School Outfit
I’ll willing admit that Target is one of my favorite stores. You can usually find me at our local store at least once a week. And it has been a great store when it comes to our back to school needs this year. With W starting pre-K next week, I needed a few more things than I have in the past.
Last month, I shared how we were able to purchase all of our essential back to school supplies at Target. We got everything we needed with a price tag that this mom felt good about. But we needed more than a new backpack and lunch box. W has played hard in his clothes this summer, so we needed some new clothes for school!
So what do you need to help choose a great first day of school outfit?
Choose Pieces that Coordinate
One of the best ways to get the most for your money is to follow my plan of buying the collection of mix and match pieces. I love the clothing that is offered for both boys and girls at Target and would happily go in and buy one of each piece. Then W could choose his outfit every single day!
But taking him shopping with me was part of the fun. So I let him choose most of his shirts and kept track of the matching bottoms that we would need to make sure everything coordinated fairly well.
Don’t Forget the Basics
Some of the things I had forgotten to put on our shopping list were socks and underwear! Luckily while we were shopping, W spotted some underwear he wanted to get and I was able to stock up from the great options available. I always try to buy a few packs of the same type of socks so we have plenty of socks and they are easy to match!
Keep it Simple
It might be because I’m dressing a boy and young boy but I’ve found the key to picking out a great outfit is to keep it simple. When we bought all of his new clothes for school, I tried to guide him in the direction of similar colors and tops that would match bottoms in basic colors. Then he can pick and choose what he wants to wear without me having to worry about what he looks like.
Target always has great basic bottoms that fit well, are affordable, and are very durable for us. And I love the great variety available in both boys and girls tops. From solid colors and casual pieces to fancier tops or just t-shirts with cute designs, there really is something for every kid.
I have a feeling we’ll be picking up a few new pieces as we get closer to winter. Once the weather finally cools off here, we’ll need to get some long sleeved tops and some pants as well. I like knowing that Target will have what we need and that it will coordinate well with the clothes we already have! They have everything we need for back to school and throughout the school year!
Oh, and back to school clothes at Target are awesome! Which is very important.
With our new backpack, lunch box, school supplies, and clothes, W is ready to make his Pre-K debut next week!
What is important to you when choosing a back to school outfit?
Every little thing is a really big deal.
