The holiday season is all about making memories so when it comes to decorating, I’m all about creating things with the kids. It is a great way to make our house feel more like a home and to make some great memories at the same time. Each year our street lines the street with luminaries on Christmas Eve and I just love the warmth of the glow. So it inspired me to sit down with W and create these easy Indoor DIY Luminaries for Christmas this year!
Indoor DIY Luminaries for Christmas
The great thing about luminaries is that they are so easy to make! The ones we put around the neighborhood are just white bags with some sand and a tea light. But for inside the house, I wanted something a bit more festive. So I pulled out our Elmer’s Painters® Paint Markers so W and I could add some holiday color to our designs!
I wanted to get W involved in making some luminaries for our house but I wanted them to all go together as well. So I decided to print out a tree shape to put on the front of each bag we used. It was easy to pull a tree shape from a free clip art site but then I had to figure what size to make it. My hint is to measure the front of your bag and then use a photo editing program or website to resize your graphic to the size you need.
I figured out that a 4×6 tree would work well on our bags. So I resized the tree shape and then printed them on our printer. We were able to fit two on a sheet of card stock! And I definitely recommend using card stock to print these because it’s got more weight than paper. Next time I might print them on green card stock so we can just decorate the trees!
What you need:
- Elmer’s Painters® Bright Colors Paint Markers
- Elmer’s Painters® Neon Brights Colors Paint Markers
- Christmas tree shapes printed on cardstock (one per bag)
- White paper bags
- Battery operated tea lights
What you do:
- Create and print your Christmas tree image. Print enough for each bag to have one.
- Use Elmer’s Painters® Paint Markers to color in the trees.
- Cut the tree shapes out and glue to the front of the paper bags. Let dry.
- Place one tea light in each bag and display around your home.
So you might be wondering how to make these DIY luminaries safe for indoor use. And the key is all in the tea light. Instead of using a regular tea light, we use battery operated tea lights so there is no heat or fire involved!
I love the way these easy to make luminaries add a warm, soft glow to the darker areas of our home like the stairs and the hallway. It’s just another way to add an extra little festive touch this holiday season!
