When Pixar started working on their newest film, Inside Out, they faced a challenge. A major challenge. A challenge that was quite possibly the one thing they had to handle to make the movie happen. If they didn’t, you wouldn’t be gearing up to meet Joy and all of her fellow emotions.
If they hadn’t faced the challenge and overcome it, we’d still be left wondering…
Inside the Mind: The World of Inside Out
So what was the big challenge? It involved answering one little question.
What does the mind look like?
No, not the brain. The mind.
The mind is much more than the physical brain and that was the challenge.
The creative team didn’t want to avoid the mind looking like the brain. But they had to figure out how to go beyond and show us the differences between the “real” world and the “mind” world where Joy and her friends live.
Oh, and they had to make it so both kids and adults would understand it.
The Real World versus The Mind World
Production Designer, Ralph Eggleston, broke it down for us on my recent trip to Pixar Studios to learn more about the making of Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out.
- Hard surfaces in the Real World versus soft surfaces in the Mind
- Muted colors versus highly saturated colors
- Low contrast versus high contrast
- Visually complex textures in the Real World versus caricatured organic patterns in the Mind World
So when you’re watching Inside Out watch for these things. I have a feeling you’ll always know exactly which world you’re in. Even as the colors and brilliance of the Mind World become more and more desaturated as the movie goes on.
But don’t worry too much. I’ve been told that it all comes together in the end and we get to see how Riley, the little girl facing the challenges of growing up, survives it all with her emotions by her side… well, inside her mind.
So be sure to check out Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out, in theaters June 19th, and see how the Real World compares to the Mind World. Then you can think about what your own mind might look like!
