5 Ways to Keep the Family Computer Safe
When it comes to the family computer (and other devices), you want everyone to be safe. With so many different ways to get online, it’s important to keep everyone safe. So we’ve got some guidelines to help your busy family stay safe online!
1. Protect your home network.
This one isn’t really a rule that you want to post on the wall or anything but it’s something that many people overlook. You figure you’re at home so everything should be safe.
But if you have a Wi-Fi network that means while you’re on the computer, your kids might be streaming videos in their rooms, and if you haven’t protected your network, who knows what your neighbor might be using your connection to do! So be sure you’ve got a secure network and set your family computer up for success from the start! You’ll have so much peace of mind!
2. Protect their online experience.
It’s important to talk with your kids as they get older and have more access to the online world. But if you’re like us, even your younger kids are getting online. So it’s up to use to protect them as much as we can. If you have multiple generations living under one roof, like we do, you might also be protecting an older generation from some of the viruses and scams going around.
So once you’ve protected your network, be sure to protect your devices. Protection from viruses, trojans, and spyware is extremely important. You also want to feel safe while browsing the internet and shopping online! It’s that peace of mind thing again. So this isn’t a guideline for the family computer, but more a preparation guideline for us as parents!
3. Protect all of your devices.
Let’s face it, these days the family computer is not the only place to connect to the internet! Kids have smartphones and tablets just like the adults. So it’s important to keep all of your devices protected. Be sure that you have the protection you need on every device your family owns! Sometimes phones and tablets get overlooked but I actually use my phone just as much as my laptop!
4. Install Parent Controls
As your kids get older, having conversations about online safety are so important. You also have to set the expectations for behavior on social media sites. But taking a few extra steps for safety doesn’t hurt.
Use parental control software to block content that you don’t want your kids stumbling upon! Even the most responsible kid can easily make a wrong turn on the Internet!
5. Back Up and Stay Updated
Once you’ve got everyone protected, be sure to that you keep all of your devices up-to-date. You don’t want to have any vulnerabilities because you have outdated programs or apps running!
Then be sure to back up your computers and devices regularly! Just in case something happens, you don’t want to lose all of those precious photos and important documents!
