Summer is just a few weeks away and this year W is all about being outside. He has always enjoyed the outdoors but now that he is mobile he just wants to get outside and play! We have a local community pool in our new neighborhood and I plan on spending a lot of time at the pool with him but lately I have been on the hunt for great outdoor toys for W to use in our front and back yards! Little Tikes is a brand that we have trusted since W was a small fry and loved his Little Tikes 5-in-1 Adjustable Gym. So I knew exactly where to look when I wanted ideas for great outdoor toys for toddlers!
Little Tikes offers an amazing variety of outdoor play toys for kids of all ages!
We received the Little Tikes Big Digger Sandbox and I was excited because it is perfect for the warm weather that has rolled in to the Houston area over the past few weeks. Before we event took the sandbox out of the box, there were a few features that I loved.
The Big Digger Sandbox includes:
- An excavator attached to the sandbox that actually scoops and moves sand but won’t get lost because it’s attached!
- Molded ramps and roadways in the sand area so W can drive his cars and trucks all around the play area!
- A lid that also doubles as a truck ramp and increases the play area of the sandbox!
- A great package of toys and accessories that includes a dump truck, rake, shovel, sand sifter, sand cup, and two character figures!
We also discovered that The Big Digger Sandbox requires a bit of adult assembly so J got on the job with a little “help” from W!
I was thrilled because the sandbox was easy to assemble and we were ready to take it outside in less than 10 minutes! The only tool needed was a screwdriver and J was able to put it together even with W helping him! Of course, W loved the box that the sandbox came in almost as much as the sand box itself!
Once the sandbox had been put together, I was ready to move it outside and get it filled with sand. The directions recommended that you fill it with 100 pounds of sand so I wasn’t really looking forward to that but I had a different challenge to deal with before I could even worry about the sand!
W thought the Little Tikes Big Digger Sandbox was great for indoor play without any sand! It’s great to know that it’s such a versatile toy! Of course, it was his first sandbox and he didn’t even know what was in store! He spent at least ten minutes playing in the sandbox before I could get it outside and begin working on my sand project!
Despite the recommendation for 100 pounds of sand, I was getting the Little Tikes Big Digger Sandbox ready for a toddler play date and knew I didn’t want it to be too full. I actually ended up using a single bag of sand from the hardware store. It didn’t have a weight on it but it wasn’t 100 pounds. I had purchased 3 bags of play sand just to be safe so we have 2 left to use throughout the summer! While there was definitely room for more sand, I think I started with the perfect amount for smaller kids.
W loved the sandbox when it was empty in the house and he was an even bigger fan of when it was full of sand and sitting out in the front yard! He loves trucks and anything with wheels which is why I liked the construction theme of the Big Digger Sandbox. The Dump Truck was a huge hit! It was W’s first experience with sand that wasn’t at the beach and yes, he did try to eat some and quickly discovered that it was fun to throw out of the sandbox. This was all before his friends even arrived at our house!
Thankfully there was still come sand in the Big Digger Sandbox by the time W’s friends arrived! They ranged in age from 16 months to 3.5 years old and they all had a great time with the sandbox. W quickly learned that it was big enough to sit in even when it had sand in it so he spent a lot of time doing that!
The Little Tikes Big Digger Sandbox was a huge hit with W and his friends! It was also great for J and I because it was so easy to assemble and then when it was also a breeze to clean up and put away because the lid is built right in! We won’t ever have to wonder what happened to the lid because it is attached to the side of the sandbox when it’s open!
The Big Digger Sandbox is a great addition to our outdoor toys (which is actually made up of a number of Little Tikes toys) and will be getting a lot of use this summer. If you are looking for a sandbox, I highly recommend checking out the variety Little Tikes sandboxes! I’m hoping to try one of the Little Tikes water tables very soon as well! My niece and nephew have one and W loves playing with it when we visit them!
