Purina Pet Haven is a partnered post with Purina Waggin’ Train, but all opinions are my own.
I’m a rescue dog though I’m not sure why because I’m pretty awesome. When my new Mom and Grambo came to the shelter where I was living (they were there to visit another dog!) and picked me to come home with them, I felt all warm and fuzzy. Grambo held me and I put my head on her shoulder. The deal was sealed! Finding a safe haven was the start of good things for me and so I’m yipping for joy about Purina Pet Haven, a new dog park housed in a domestic violence shelter located in Manhattan.
Now my doggie pals get to stay with their moms during tough times and this is good for everyone. Family is everything!
Purina Pet Haven
On October 13, 2015, the Urban Resource Institute (URI) teamed with Nestle Purina PetCare (Purina) to cut the ribbon for the opening of the Purina Pet Haven dog park. It’s located at the Urban Women’s Retreat (UWR), an emergency shelter that’s part of URIPALS (People and Animals Living Safely) program. It’s one of the few shelters that lets survivors of domestic violence live in the shelter alongside their pets!
I can’t imagine a better time to be with my family. When my family is facing challenges, I’m all about being with them and giving them love.
Domestic abuse impacts all members of a family, including pets. Dr. Kurt Venator, a Purina veterinarian, tells us that “the bond with pets is incredibly strong, and for people in abusive relationships their pet can be an important source of comfort.” Being together can help everyone heal and move forward.
My family has been through some challenging times over the past few years so I know how true this is for them!
Purina Cares with Purina Pet Haven
Purina sponsored the design and construction of Purina Pet Haven!
And this is not their first venture into providing shelter for pets and their owners from domestic violence. In 2014, they sponsored the creation of another dog park, Purina Play Haven, in Brooklyn.
In addition, they donate Purina ONE brand dog food, Purina Cat Chow brand cat food, along with many treats and litter. Supplies for welcome kits for the families are also part of Purina’s donations. This includes travel carriers, safety gates, pet beds, bowls, scratching posts, leashes and toys. Purina is all in for this project and that makes me wag my tail!
As many as 48% of domestic violence victims stay in their situations because they don’t want to leave their pets behind. We’re important members of the family! They’re afraid they’ll also get abused if no one is there to protect them. That’s why URIPALS was started. URIPALS’ many needs led to them pairing up with Purina to raise awareness about the impact of abuse on all members of the family. Including pets!
I know how lucky I am to have found my forever family! I never want to be separated from them! So I’m wagging my tail in support of Purina and URIPALS. Thanks for Purina Pet Haven!
