Quick Ways to Make Kids School Lunch Fun
Weston started Kindergarten this year and he’s a picky eater. That means no buying school lunch for this mom. I’m on lunch packing duty all year long. All year long!
That means I needed to sit down and come up with some easy ways that I could make lunch fun and exciting throughout the year to keep him eating. No, I’m not talking bento box works of art. I’m talking about simple ways to make kids school lunch fun.
Send a Special Note
I have a mom friend who is a great artist and every morning she sketches a drawing for her daughter on the napkin in her lunch. While I don’t claim to be an artist, I do love how quick and easy it is for me to jot down a little note for Weston on a napkin.
I might make it a little love note since he still likes that. Or maybe a silly little drawing or even some stickers stuck on! It doesn’t have to be complicated or require additional supplies to be special and make lunch a bit more fun.
Send a Joke
Depending the age of your kids and the reading level, there are some great printables out there with some silly lunchbox jokes on them! One of my good friends, Jenn from TheSuburbanMom.com has some great printable lunch box jokes you can download.
Weston loves jokes so when he’s older, I’ll definitely be doing some of these. If you don’t want to print out anything, you can always write one on the napkin or on a piece of paper and include it!
There’s nothing like a joke of the day to keep lunch fun!
Send a Game
Weston also loves to play games, so another napkin idea is to include a little game he can play! His favorite is Tic-Tac-Toe but he always is asking me to make a homemade connect the dot puzzle. That one might take me a bit more planning but I just might surprise him one day!
There are some great printable games out there like shape matching where the kids can sort their food by shape and I’ve also seen some great pre-made mazes if your kids like that kind of thing!
Send Something They Love
One the best ways I’ve found to keep kids school lunch fun is to offer variety in their food. Now I’m not talking about the lunch box being the place to toss in brand new and exotic taste treats. Weston would toss that all in the trash and not hesitate to tell me about it!
Make a list of all of the foods your kids like. Then include the staples but keep it fresh by rotating in different things that they love. Sure, sometimes this might be an extra dessert or something along those lines but not always!
Our recent lunchbox addition that has changed things up a bit are DOLE Mixations! It’s the newest, one-of-a-kind fruit fusion that’s a simple and delicious twist on two snack time staples: applesauce cups and fruit cups.
My kids love both applesauce and fruit cups, which made this an obvious addition to our lunch box routine. I also love them because of the packaging! All of our quick ideas for making kids school lunch fun can be written right on the lid of the DOLE Mixations! How easy and fun is that?
