Review & Giveaway: Bum Genius 4.0 OS from Wee Little Changes (US)

Wee Little ChangesMany of you may know that the majority of the pockets in our cloth diaper stash are Bum Genius one size 3.0s. They are definitely the most popular diaper across the family. They get the most use and they have worked well for us. Many of you may also know that Wee Little Changes is one of my favorite online cloth diaper shops. They offer amazing customer service and free shipping in the US! What more could I ask for in a cloth diaper shop?

I was thrilled when April from Wee Little Changes wanted to get involved with Cloth Leaves Nothing Behind because I love to share as much as I can about great online retailers. When she offered me the opportunity to review the Bum Genius 4.0 One Size, I was thrilled.

Ever since the BG 4.0 was released, I have been interested in how the 4.0 compares to the 3.0s that we love.

I had read other reviews that mentioned improved aplix and larger sizing so I was interested in seeing how it would work for us.

Bum Genius 4.0 One Size Cloth DiaperWe received the Bum Genius 4.0 One Size in Ribbit which happens to be one of my favorite BG colors. I love how vibrant it is and how well it works for either a boy or a girl. The major difference I noticed when I unwrapped the diaper was that the inserts seemed larger to me. The diaper itself appeared to be very similar to the 3.0 before I placed them next to each other to compare.

The Bum Genius 4.0 has a variety of features that I appreciate including:

  • replaceable elastic (though we haven’t had to test this feature yet)
  • 3 different sizing options designed to fit baby from 7 pounds through 35 pounds
  • stretchy tabs to provide a more comfortable fit
  • slot cover to keep the insert inside the diaper and keep your baby dry
  • wide slot to make it easier to stuff

Bum Genius laundry tabsOne feature I’m thrilled to see has remained are the laundry tabs. The Bum Genius laundry tabs have always worked well for us. The only challenge has been the actual tabs themselves. As we washed our 3.0s the tabs began to curl. So far the 4.0 has held up well through multiple washings so I hope that this is part of the improved hook and loop features. Still, the BG laundry tabs have been some of the most reliable in our diaper stash. It will be interesting to see how the tabs on the 40 hold up over the next few months.

Bum Genius Insert comparisonAfter I washed the new 4.0, I got out a 3.0 that is in good shape so I could compare the sizing. The initial feeling I had about the 4.0 inserts proved to be correct. When I placed a full-size insert from a 3.0 (left) next to the insert from the 4.0 (right) there was an obvious size difference. I found this very interesting and figured that it meant there was a definite sizing difference between the two diapers.

I did find it interesting that the sizing snaps on the two inserts were placed with the same spacing so the length appears to have been added to both ends of the insert. Still, the sizing difference has not had an impact on diaper laundry. You can stuff either diaper with either insert and they both work well.

BG 3.0 versus BG 4.0When I placed the two diaper covers next to each other, there was also a visible size difference. In my photos the Bum Genius 3.0 is shown in Twilight and the Bum Genius 4.0 is shown in Ribbit.

As you can see there is a definite difference in the length of the diaper covers when they are unsnapped to the largest size setting. This setting is design to fit babies from 23 – 35 pounds. With W weighing around 26 pounds, this is the size setting that we use with him.

There is also a difference in the width of the new diaper versus the old version. I was pleased to see this difference in sizing since we have a big guy on our hands. To be honest, I wasn’t too sure how big of a difference this would make in the fit and the absorbency but I liked seeing the extra room.

When comparing the two diapers secured with the aplix, the size difference was still very apparent. There doesn’t appear to be much difference between the fabric above the loop strip but their is definitely additional room beneath the loop strip. Both diapers are unsnapped to the largest setting in the photo and you can see how much bigger the Ribbit 4.0 is than the Twilight 3.0. The Bum Genius claims that the 4.0 provides more generous sizing and based on my comparison, I would have to agree.

Bum Genius 4.0Once I put the Bum Genius 4.0 on W, I was very pleased with the fit. The larger sizing didn’t effect the fit at the waist and thighs. The elastic is gentle yet fits securely against his skin. From time to time, depending on how he is laying while sleeping the elastic can leave a mark on his skin but it fades quickly. It’s never been much of an issue for us.

Bum Genius fit comparisonI am a fan of higher rise because W is so long. Many diapers that claim to have a lower rise are just two low and we get leaks immediately. So anything with a higher rise definitely catches my eye. In the photo to the left you can see the Bum Genius 4.0 (top) compared to the Bum Genius 3.0 (bottom). In that photo both are shown in the Ribbit color. This photo isn’t the greatest as the 3.0 is W when he was younger so the diaper is snapped down. But you can see that the general fit of both diapers is very well on my chunky monkey.

If you have a bigger child, I would highly recommend the Bum Genius line. We have enjoyed the One Size pockets and the sized AIOs we have in our stash. The Bum Genius 4.0 One Size definitely earns a place at the list of our favorite diapers. I enjoy the more generous sizing and the new aplix has held up well. Although I haven’t tried the BumGenius 4.0 One Size with snaps but I would love the opportunity to try that diaper as well. If you are not an aplix fan, I would still recommend the Bum Genius.

The only challenge we have fun into with our Bum Genius involves some stinkies in the microfiber inserts. This problem has been resolved with the use of distilled white vinegar and eventually a bleaching of the inserts according to the directions on the Bum Genius website.
