As a technology teacher, I’m always on the hunt for programs that will help my students master basic computer skills as well as reinforce the learning from the classroom. When I was asked to review the Color By Numbers computer program, I jumped at the chance after visiting the website. It sounded like a wonderful program for my younger students. My kindergarten and first grade students love paint programs and Color By Numbers is a paint program with a little bit extra.
Color By Numbers features coloring books where the areas of the pictures are numbered. It’s just like an old-fashioned Paint By Numbers activity but now it’s on the computer. It is a great way to combine painting and creativity with number identification. I was sure that my kindergarten students would love it and I was correct!
I installed Color By Numbers Animals on 6 computers in my lab and let my kindergarten students try it as they visited me during the week. They enjoyed exploring the pictures which range from a lion and a giraffe to a cow and a goose! There is something for every child. This was an especially engaging program because so many of my kindergarteners like painting and animals. Of course, they didn’t focus on the number identification and number matching aspect, but as a teacher I knew they were practicing basic academic skills at the same time.
I was surprised by one thing that happened in my computer lab. My students always notice when there is something new on the desktop and it was no different with Color By Numbers. I had students from all grade levels (kindergarten through fourth) asking me if they could try the new game. I figured the older kids would be less than interested once they started using it, but I was wrong! They spent just as much time as my kindergarten students.
The Color By Numbers program proved to be a hit in my computer lab! Sometimes some of the more simple programs are the ones that have the greatest impact. I also love that it is a program you download and not web-based as we use a number of web-based programs in the lab and if the internet happens to be down, we are very limited. This is a great addition to my computer lab!
In addition to the different coloring modes, Color By Numbers also has some other great features:
- The images featured are high quality and child friendly.
- It’s easy to change the preset colors. Even my kindergarteners figured it out on their own! (I will admit, they are better than me sometimes!)
- It works well on a variety of screen resolutions.
- It features multiple languages.
- It works on a number of platforms!
- It has music and sounds! This is a must for my students. If there isn’t some sort of sound, they are convinced that their headphones are broken!
Overall, I was very impressed by the Color By Numbers program. I had the opportunity to explore all three coloring books on my own and I spent a good chunk of time in all three.
