This Rogue One Interview with Ben Mendelsohn is part of my #RogueOneEvent press trip. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Rogue One Interview with Ben Mendelsohn
Ben Mendelsohn was next in our Rogue One interview day and I have to admit it was one of the interviews I was excited about. Some of my most recent Netflix binges have involved Bloodline, a Netflix original series that he’s in and that I am hooked on. I was excited when I found out he was going to be in Rogue One and when I saw his name on the interview list, I was ready to go!
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story follows a group of unlikely heroes in a time of conflict who band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.
In the film, Ben Mendelsohn plays Director Orson Krennic, the main antagonist! Director Orson Krennic is a villian, there’s no doubt about that! He’s an Imperial apparatchik who plans to use his Deathtroopers to take care of the Rebel uprising. He hopes to find himself in the Emperor’s graces but also needs to avoid the wrather of Darth Vader! It should be quite the adventure to watch!
Life as a Star Wars Villian with Ben Mendelsohn
Much of our interview with Ben Mendelsohn was full of laughs. He’s amazingly funny with a dry, dead pan humor as we chatted with him about his role as one of the newest villians in the Star Wars franchise. I mean who imagines that one day they will end up on the side of the Empire?
He admitted to us that it’s the “folly of youth” to think that you would never end up going to the Dark side. But really, he told us that he wishes he could have known that one day he’d be in Rogue One because he would have told himself at different points in his life, “Don’t worry, you’ll be in Star Wars.”
Yes, Ben Mendelsohn is a Star Wars fan, just like so many of us.
So we asked him who he thought was more dangerous — Darth Vader or Director Orson Krennic? Ben Mendelsohn admitted that Darth Vader is pretty good but that he’d like to see him against a few squadrons or the Death Star. He sees Darth as a figurehead but then asked us, “Who gets things done?”
“He’s a great car, but someone’s got to drive!”
Although I haven’t seen the entire film yet, I have a feeling that Krennic is going to be a force to be reckoned with. Mendelsohn told us that when he put that costume on (it’s amazing if you haven’t seen it yet), he just felt the power.
We wanted to know what it was like to play a villian and he reassured us that when you’ve been acting a while you hope peopel will just feel it, whatever it is. You want the audience to feel you, even if it’s hating a character.
Rest assured, Ben Mendelsohn might play a Star Wars villian on the big screen, but in person he’s hilarious and has a lot to say. I’m thankful I had the opportunity to chat with him!
