Now that W goes to preschool twice a week, we’re falling into a before school routine and an after school routine. Our mornings are pretty straight forward with two kids to get fed and dressed before it’s time to make the short drive to school. But I’ve been working on figuring out how to make our afternoons go as smoothly as possible.
Our After School Routine
One thing I really wanted to focus on with our after school routine was being able to take a little bit of time with W after his day at school. So this is what seems to be working well for us these days.
One thing I’ve noticed is that W is usually hungry when we get home even though they have an afternoon snack at school. So sitting down at the table with him to enjoy a snack is a great way to catch a few minutes of his time. It works well because C is usually willing to sit and have a snack of her own.
Sometimes I even surprise W with a special snack. Like one of his favorite doughnuts or something we don’t have every single day. I like doing little things to make him smile when he’s not expecting them.
The makers of Simply Orange and Simply Lemonade have launched a new line of juice drinks in flavors that my family is loving and work great for snack time. You can now try Fruit Punch, Tropical, and Mixed Berry. The Simply Juice drinks are all natural, made with simple ingredients and real fruit juice. They have no added preservatives, colors or artificial flavors!
It’s been a great surprise addition to our time together after school!
Talk About the Day
While we’re all having a snack together, I do my best to find out as much about W’s day as possible. I find that it works best to look through his folder and talk about the work he’s done. If I just ask him about what he did, he’ll tell me that he doesn’t remember or that he did nothing.
But he’s always wiling to talk about the craft they made or the letters they practiced. And sometimes we have to chat a bit about his daily report too. He just got his first S rather than all Es! He was happy to tell me exactly why too. If only it would always be that way!
Once we’re done with snack, I make sure to spend at least 20 or 30 minutes playing with the kids. I find that it’s a great way to reconnect with W after school and C loves when we all play together.
If the weather is nice out then we head to the backyard to play on the swing set. And if the weather isn’t quite as nice, we’ve been hitting up W’s current love — all things LEGO. And let me tell you that you can find some strange things in W’s LEGO world! It’s a lot of fun and a great way to sneak in some quality time.
I love that we’ve found a great after school routine and am looking forward to enjoying it in these months leading up to summer! Then it will be a whole new puzzle to figure out!
