Our easy sight word matching with Post-it® Brand is a sponsored partnership. However with Weston starting Kindergarten this fall, it was the perfect time for us to start thinking about back to school!
Sight Word Matching
When it comes to our youngest learners, sight word activities are a big part of the first few years of school. They’re extremely important because 50% of all reading texts are made up of the same 100 words! These sight words are the most frequently used and repeated words in the English language and most of them don’t have ways to sound them out.
If our young readers can recognize them on sight then they’ll be able to understand about half of the words in the book they’re reading! That’s a great start to building up their reading skills and a love for reading!
Back to School with Gen Z
Gen Z is the entire generation headed back to school in the next few weeks and Weston will be joining them as one of the youngest and newest students! It’s an exciting time around here!
They’re a group of students who have grown up during the digital era. Technology has been part of their lives since birth. They might be growing up in the digital age but they still value writing things down.
Post-it® Brand commissioned research on Gen Z and education and found out some interesting things!
- 85% of Gen Z learn best when they use digital and non-digital tooks for their school work.
- 83% feel that handwritten notes give them more freedom in their note-taking.
- 81% said they’d feel restricted if they could only use digital devices.
- 85% believe they’re more likely to get something down if they write it down on paper.
Knowing this has me feeling good about the way we’ve been doing things with Weston. He loves playing games on his tablet, but he also enjoys using paper, pens, and pencils.

Easy Sight Word Matching Activity
Weston got a list of sight words to work on over the summer. I’ll admit that we’ve spent most of the summer just enjoying it. But I’ve also been doing my best to sneak a little bit of learning in too. It works best in short doses and different ways. Since he’s a huge fan of Post-it® Super Sticky Notes, they were a logical addition to our sight word practice!
If you’re looking for an easy way to practice sight words with your child, keep it simple. Grab your sight word list and your Post-it® Super Sticky Notes and make a quick matching game.
Sight word matching is a great activity because you can easily adjust the level of the activity by changing up the number of words. So it’s a great one to use whether they’re just beginning or almost have the entire list mastered!
What You Need:
- Sight word list
- Post-it® Super Sticky Notes
- Blank sheet of paper
What You Do:
- Write one word from your list on each of your Post-it® Super Sticky Notes.
- Write the same words in different locations on your blank sheet of paper.
- Have your child stick the Post-it® Super Sticky Notes on the matching word on the paper.
It’s a basic activity that is simple to set up but can easily be adapted.
You can add more and more words to your matching game until your child can do them all! Or add in a timer and let them try to beat the clock! If you use different colored Post-it® Super Sticky Notes, you can challenge your child to do all of one color at a time.
These Post-it® Super Sticky Notes from the World of Color Miami and Rio de Janeiro collections are perfect for keeping the game vibrant and fun! Changing it up a bit is a great way to really help your child build the quick recognition skills that will help them on their journey to become great readers!
So while we’re all preparing for Weston and the rest of Gen Z to head off to school soon, here at home we’re also using some of those same concepts around our house.
To demonstrate the power of writing, Post-it® Brand is encouraging people nationwide, especially Gen Z students, to write down goals, aspirations and more, as a way to make them stick and accomplish tasks, both big and small in the new school year. Join me in sharing your family’s goals and aspirations this year by tagging @Postit Brand on social media and using the hashtag, #MakeitStick.
I know that I’m definitely more likely to get things done if I write them down! So I’ve been using a variety of Post-it® Products to help me be more productive!
I’m in love with the Post-it® Tabs right now. The Post-it® Brand World of Color collection is gorgeous and goes well with some notebooks I’m using to organize things in my life.
I can see how they could be a huge help as Weston gets older. The World of Color collection also includes Post-it® Super Sticky Notes and Post-it® Flags. So there are plenty of great ways to get organized whether you’re taking notes or organizing notes!
Stock up no matter how old or young your Gen Z students are and be ready for plenty of learning this school year!
