I have been using Skype for quite a few years. My dad and have used it to keep in touch since I live in Texas and he is North Carolina. I’ve used to communicate with fellow bloggers when planning events. Since W was born we have been using it to call the grandparents and great-grandparents who are out-of-state. It’s a fabulous way to stay in touch with relatives who are far away.
I really thought that Skype was just a great way to chat with video and text.
There is so much more to it than that!
I knew that there was the capability to do group video calling. That’s one feature I plan on using later this week with some great mommy blogger friends of mine! I will be sure to update all about it. You know you want the crazy details about what mommy bloggers chat about!
But I also discovered a number of great features that I wanted to try…
I’ve participated in a number of conference calls but never realized that I could hold them on Skype! I’ve always dialed in on the phone. I would definitely prefer to connect via my computer using Skype. It’s just more comfortable for me to use a headset to conference call. If everyone is on Skype then it’s absolutely free! You can add phone users by purchasing Skype credits so everyone can make the call!
I love the idea of being able to show your screen to the person you’re chatting with. I have used a number of screen capture programs in the past to create tutorials. Skype gives me the capability to share my screen in real-time with anyone! You can even share with a group! It’s free for one-on-one calls and you can use Skype credits to get a group involved.
Skype offers the ability to have an online number that people can call from their telephones. You can answer on Skype no matter where you are! You get a voicemail box with each line in case you’re not available to answer. This is a great way to protect yourself online if you need to communicate for business. If you use websites like Craigslist, this is a great contact alternative! You can get a number for $18/3 months or $60/year!
I finally had to decide which new (to me) premium service I wanted to try…
I couldn’t resist trying the Skype WiFi service! I thought it would be the most helpful to me for a number of reasons.
- Using 3G on my Android phone drains the battery quickly.
- My iPad and iPod Touch only have WiFi capabilities.
- I am addicted to checking my email.
These are the reasons I have been looking for a WiFi solution for when I travel. I have a few trips coming up and WiFi can be spotty. I hate to go too long without checking my email. It makes me nervous. Yes, I’m addicted to it. I know!
This is why Skype WiFi is a great option for me and will make my life easier!
It was so simple to get set up! All I had to do was download the Skype WiFi app for my iPad. Then I logged in and located a hotspot and was ready to go! With rates around 19 cents per minute, this is a great alternative for me when traveling! It would be great for desperate times with W too! I will have to test it next time we’re waiting somewhere and he’s had enough of it!
I’ve found yet another use for Skype! It’s going to make my life just a bit less stressful at times! Yes, I get stressed out over my email. I can’t be alone in that… can I?
