Texas Recipes for Summer Cookouts
When you think of Texas, there’s a lot that might come to mind. We pride ourselves on our gorgeous hill country but we also have amazing beaches, lakes, and rivers. Fantastic colleges, amazing music, even some line dancing, and tasty Texas recipes. Everything is bigger and better in Texas, right? There’s just a ton to love about this state I know call home.
So when Ozarka® Brand Natural Spring Water asked us to share why we love living here, it was easy to come up with a long list. But the food topped the list. There are some amazing local digs across the state that we’ve had the chance to enjoy. But there are also tons of great Texas-based brands that we use around out house!
Food is a huge part of life, especially during the summer months when we all seem to take extra time to spend with family and friends. Cooking out each weekend with family is one of our favorite things to do. It’s easy to do too! Let the kids run around outside while the adults all relax on the deck. It doesn’t get much better than that!
Texas Recipes – Guacamole
One of our favorite things about living in the Houston area is the Tex-Mex! It really can’t be beat! We love to bring those flavors home whenever we can. But it’s really got to have some spice to it. Guacamole is one of my favorite appetizers and it’s a great addition to any cookout. Add some queso to the mix and you’ve got an easy set up that will tide people over until you get the grill fired up!
If you’re looking for some Texas-based queso to save some time in the kitchen Cookwell & Company Queso is some of the best we have found! It’s almost like being at our favorite Tex-Mex restaurant! Pair it up with Texas Paqui Tortilla Chips and you might not even miss the guacamole! But I’m a huge guac fan so I like to throw together an easy batch.
What You Need:
- 6 medium ripe avocados
- 2 medium ripe tomatoes, finely diced
- 1 medium white or red onion, finely chopped
- 1/2 cip cilantro, chopped
- 4 Tbs. lemon juice
- 2 tsp. salt (or to taste)
- 1/2 tsp. Yellowbird Serrano Sauce (or to taste)
What You Do:
- Half each avocado, remove the pit, and scoop out the flesh.
- Mash in a bowl until you get your desired consistency.
- Stir in all other ingredients.
- Serve immediately or chill in the refrigerator until ready to serve!
The trick to keeping your guacamole from going brown in the refrigerator is to cover it with plastic wrap and make sure the wrap is touching the guacamole so the air doesn’t come in contact!
Hamburgers are a grilling staple for us because it’s easy to change up your flavors with some simple recipe tweaks. When we’re feeling the Tex-Mex vibe but still want to grill, it’s all about the Tex-Mex burgers!
We make flavorful burger patties with help from The Spice Kings‘ The Juicy Steak beef rub (it’s great in burgers) then add in chopped peppers and cheese. Justin likes it spicy so he usually goes with jalapenos in his burgers while Grambo and I prefer the poblano peppers in ours. They are some of the best burgers around and so easy to make. Mix everything together then divide it out and make your patties!
Toss them on the grill and you’re good to go! Then serve them up on some fresh baked onion rolls from the local bakery for real perfection!
Tex-mex meets burgers in the perfect Texas way!
