My daughter Mariah, son-in-law Justin and I decided to pool our resources a few years ago and buy a house together. The benefits we saw in this decision were financial prosperity and developing strong family connections. So we took the plunge and found the perfect home. Shortly after that, my first grandchild, Weston, was born and we became three generations under one roof…and that includes our dog Toby!
Three Generations Under One Roof
I have learned a lot living in a multi-generational household…and I wanted to share some lessons on how we make things work at our house. Here are some tips from Grambo:
Most important lesson is to talk to one another openly and honestly…no room for hurt feelings and resentment. Now that is not to say that sometimes we disagree, but we can always come to an agreement that works for everyone in the long run. Mariah and I are so much alike…sometimes our “talking” can become very animated. But as long as we always know our love and friendship remain strong, we are OK. Plus you must always put your listening ears on and hear what the other person is saying.
We are planners; we like to be organized and we LOVE to make lists. But a family of five has got to be flexible and be able to incorporate changes at the drop of a hat. I like to think that these spontaneous changes add excitement to our daily routine. Learning to actually prepare for “plan changes” is the goal…when you are ready to head out the door at the last minute and Weston has to go potty, just smile!
One major concept I stick to is ALWAYS follow Mom and Dad’s rules when it comes to the grandkids. I love being the Grambo and not the head master. That way I am never the bad guy. Of course, I do have my own set of rules when I am the only one at home with them…and the main rule is to have fun.
Having fun leads to laughter. The old saying “Laughter is the best medicine” is so true. The children’s antics and conversations never fail to delight all of us. So always look on the bright side and have a smile ready for everyone in the house.
Love and Making Memories
And in November 2013, our family grew again…Carrigan Iris, a plump, rosy-cheeked angel, was born. Our family is complete…except we may get a new puppy soon. We look forward to many years of making memories and experiencing life together.
