5 Easy Steps to a More Active Family
Last year I started focusing on getting myself back into a more active lifestyle and making some changes to improve my health. I wanted to be a good example for my kids. This year I want to focus on everyone becoming a more active family together!
It only takes a few easy steps to get your family’s plan in place and make it happen!
1. Talk It Out & Plan
Before you make a plan to get more active, be sure you’re on the same page as your partner. In our case, it’s Grambo, Justin, and me. Chat about goals everyone has for themselves and the goals you have for the kids.
If everyone is on the same page, it makes it easy to get more active! Plus, it’s easier to make a plan when you have more minds working together!
2. Do It Together
The most important thing to do when you’re trying to get your entire family more active is to do it together. I know this seems so simple, but what it means is thinking about your family, their personalities, their abilities, and their interests.
If you can plan active family activities that they’re interested in doing on a regular basis, you’ll be on the first step to success!
For our family, playing outside is something my kids love to do. Both Justin and I love seeing them explore and have fun, getting outside with them is also easy for us.
We’ve turned it into something that is helping us have a bit of a family workout by getting involved with them when they’re outside! Instead of just watching while they play, we’re getting involved these days!
3. Offer Choices & Variety
Once the adults are all on the same page and ready to make it happen, think about activities that different family members might enjoy. It’s all about planning activities that everyone will enjoy. Of course, you can’t do everyone’s favorite thing all of the time.
We tell the kids that everyone gets a turn doing their favorites things and we all get to do them with them!
Here are some ideas for getting your family moving that might work well:
- Play tag or hide and seek
- Play catch
- Kick a ball
- Go for a walk
- Go to the playground
- Ride bikes
- Go swimming
- Do yoga together (there are some great family friendly options online!)
- Do yard work (yes, the kids do enjoy this!)
- Have a dance party
- Jump on the trampoline
- Go play mini golf together
These are all easy ways to get everyone moving. The best part is that when you’re doing them together, they usually feel like fun more than exercise! But you’ll definitely get the blood pumping!
4. Stay Motivated
If your kids are anything like mine, then they’ll go along with pretty much anything we plan. So the key to staying motivated and having a more active family is all about me (aka the parents).
If we can stay motivated and focused on our goals, the kids will follow right along!
The thing that keeps me motivated is data. I love seeing numbers to show that the changes I’m making are making a difference. So when I got serious about getting more active and losing the weight I needed to lose to be healthy for my kids, I was ready to start tracking the numbers!
The newest addition is the Nokia Body+ scale and the Health Mate app. Since both Justin and I are focused on starting new healthy habits, we wanted a scale that could give us plenty of information.
The Nokia Body+ is an accurate, comprehensive, and family-friendly scale. It’s more than just a scale, it’s also a body analyzer and is giving us information that is really helping us understand our goals and progress.
When you step on the scale, it measures:
- weight trends
- fat mass
- muscle mass
- bone mass
It can also tell you the weather for the day!

I love all of the information the Body+ gives me about the progress I’m making, but one of the best things about it is the Health Mate app. The Health Mate app keeps a complete history of my data and can include:
It tracks my progress and trends so I can see the improvement I’m making. It can also sync with other apps you may use to track data like steps and calories.
If you’re wondering about the family-friendly aspect of the Nokia Body+ scale, it can track up to eight users which makes it great for the family. It also has a Baby Mode and a Pregnancy Mode that can provide weight tracking for those two stages of family life too!
But my favorite things and the features that keeps me extremely motivated are the tips and encouragement it gives me as I work towards my goals!
I know if I can stay motivated, I can keep my family focused and living our best lives!
5. Be Consistent & Set a Goal
Having a fit family isn’t just about being more active every so often. It’s also about being consistent. That’s the way new habits are formed!
The best way to be consistent is to make a plan and write it down! Plan activities that your family can do together and write them on your calendar!
For our family, during the spring and fall, we’re a baseball family. Weston’s baseball practices go on the calendar and then we also plan what the rest of the family is going to do while he’s practicing. We used to just let Carrigan play on the playground, but now one of us plays catch and chase with her in the empty field while the other one walks laps while watching practice.
Another thing that helped us was setting a family goal. It helped the adults stay committed and helped the kids get really excited.
We wanted to take a long weekend trip to San Antonio. We planned out activities to become a more fit family, wrote them on the calendar, and then committed to doing them for three months. As long as we stick to the plan for three months, the reward is the family trip!
Everyone is really excited! Plus we’re having a great time getting more active together. It’s doing great things for our family!
If you’re on a mission to have a more active family this year, do it! You won’t regret it at all! You’ll end up with a fit family and tons of new memories shared!
