It’s something families really should look into and consider for a few reasons. Life is all about family.
Aflac’s Cancer Protection Assurance
I’ve had a few experiences with cancer in my life as I’m sure many of us have. While I haven’t battled cancer personally, I have had some very important people in my life face battles that had huge impacts on me.
My first experience with cancer was as a child. The mother of one of my closest friends battled cancer for many years. She was like a mother to our entire group of friends. We were all part of the same children’s theater group, and our parents were a huge part of helping our products get off the ground.
We all spent many hours together and were more like a family than just friends.
One of my most vivid memories from my childhood is of the benefit performance we all put together after my friend’s mom relapsed. We wanted to raise money to donate to the family to help them in any way that they needed. We wanted to know that our friends had everything they needed.
A group of kids between the ages of 7 and 13, with help from our theater group pianist, put together an evening of songs and dances in honor of the woman we all thought of as another mother. We raised money through ticket sales and a silent auction. There were many smiles and many tears that night.
What none of us knew was that it would be the last time she would relapse. Within a few months, my friend lost her mother to cancer. There were many tears that day, as well.
Cancer is a disease that reaches out and touches so many lives. 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will battle cancer at some point during their lives (Cancer Facts and Figures,” American Cancer Society, 2017). My own mother has had to face skin cancer, and I was by her side through that. But many Americans are living with cancer as a manageable disease.
I might think more about cancer because of the way it’s touched my life. But I’m glad to have learned about Aflac’s Cancer Protection Assurance* insurance policy. I think it can be a huge asset for families.
