The first day of school is creeping up which means Weston will need me to pack lunch every day once again. So I’ve been working on some Back to School Lunch Ideas for Picky Eaters because he definitely falls into that category!
Back to School Lunch Ideas for Picky Eaters
When it comes to food, Weston is a picky eater. When he was younger, he would eat almost anything but that hasn’t happened in the past few years.
Instead of letting it get to me, I like to approach it with the thinking that he knows what he likes to eat!
He loves his chicken, milk, and his string cheese. They’ve been staples all summer long. Chicken and milk for lunch followed by string cheese for a snack.
The winner for snack time this summer has been Marvel Spider-Man String Cheese. Weston had a Spider-Man backpack for school last year and is still a huge fan.
I couldn’t complain about it at all. He has had fun with one of his favorite characters and I’ve felt good about having a snack that is a good source of calcium and protein!
The Marvel Spider-Man String Cheese has been great for on-the-go snacks too as we’ve been busy this summer!
But now the school year is upon us and I have school lunches on my mind again. I need simple school lunch ideas because I’ve got to keep it easy around here!
Make a Food List
One of the easiest ways to make it feel like simple school lunch ideas for my picky eater can be done is to make a list of the foods he will eat. In my head, I think I know what he’ll eat but when I write it down, I usually find out that I have a few more options on my list for the best school lunch ideas ever!
One year I wasted a lot of food by packing food and hoping that he would eat it. Now I don’t use school lunch time as a time to encourage him to eat a better variety. I save that for at home and stick to what I know works at school.
Also, don’t be afraid to use your list and let your kids eat the same thing again and again. I prefer some variety when it comes to what I eat, but Weston is pretty content to eat almost the same thing for lunch each day.
Keep it simple, mom!
Stock Up on Convenient Favorites
The key to easy back to school lunch ideas is being willing to keep it simple, make a plan, and stock up on the basics!
For kids who are picky eaters, knowing what they like (from your list) and stocking up on those items will make your back to school lunch prep so much easier to handle. You’ll find your groove in no time!
For us, there are some basics we make sure to have on hand for lunch making:
- Travel peanut butter cups
- Prepackaged bags of crackers
- Fruit snacks
- Applesauce pouches
- Juice pouches
These are items from Weston’s approved food list that I can count on him to eat every single day. There’s no guessing and there’s not a lot of wasted food.
Then I will swap in things he’ll also eat for a change of pace. But I always keep the basics on hand.
Make It Personal and Fun
Back to School can be a transition that kids don’t always see as fun. Not everyone is a school supply geek like I have been my entire life. They don’t always get excited about the approach of the school year.
When it comes to ‘Back to School’ lunch ideas for picky eaters, adding in some personal touches can help make the day a bit more fun as your kids get adjusted.
Remember Weston’s favorite snack time Marvel Spider-Man String Cheese? They are the perfect addition to his lunch box to make things a bit more special so I’ll continue buying those for him. Why wouldn’t I? They’re a wholesome, responsible choice for kids and work great for lunch, snacks, and even on-the-go!
There are some other easy things I do to make the best school lunch ideas simple:
- Add a short handwritten note on their napkin
- Let them each choose their own flavor of juice pouch for their lunch
- Buy them each their own fruit snacks so they can have their favorite characters on those too
It doesn’t have to be challenging to make it special with these easy back to school lunch ideas. If you keep it simple, you’ll be able to handle school lunches and your picky eater with ease this year!
