Need a good hybrid cloth diapering system? Learn more about Best Bottoms one size system!
Once again, I will admit that I used to be intimidated by the AI2/hybrid cloth diapering systems. When I was researching cloth diapers while I was pregnant, something about having a shell and snapping in the inserts really scared me!
So, I took the plunge and got a GroVia system. Once I used it a few times, I was sold on it. When I received the opportunity to try the Best Bottom system, I was ecstatic. I had always been intrigued by the wonderful color combinations of the Best Bottom shells. Once I saw the prints when they came out, I about fell out of my chair. I love the giraffes and I love that they came in colors for both boys and girls or even gender neutral!
Best Bottom One Size Diaper System
Best Bottom Diapers were created by Nicki, the owner of Nicki’s Diapers, based on all of the positives she saw in different diapers and reducing the negatives she saw. What she created was a diapering system that is easy to use and customizable to meet the needs of you and your baby! You can adjust the front snaps to adjust the size, snap in the insert, and you’re ready to go! When the insert is soiled, simply remove it and snap in a fresh one! The outer shells is wipe-able and can be reused although you may want to air dry them between uses. It sounds very simple and it really is that simple!
The diaper shells are designed to fit from birth to 35+ pounds. I will be interested to try the Best Bottom system with a newborn in the future to see how it works. The shell also features gussets to keep messes in and I really like diapers with gussets so this was a feature that really appealed to me. The shells are available in hook and loop and in snaps to meet the needs and the likes of your family!
We tried out the Best Bottom diapering system with 1 shell and 3 stay dry inserts.
When deciding which cover to choose, it was a challenge! Best Bottom offers 10 different color combinations including Chunky Monkey (brown/yellow), Orange Sherbet (orange/blue), and Cookies ‘n Cream (black/white). They also offer two different prints — Giraffe (in blue, pink, or green) and Moo-licious (cow print). All of these are offered in snaps or hook and loop. Although we’re fans of hook and loop, I’ve been concerned about the day when W might be able to pull open velcro diapers, so I decided to try the snaps. It’s a good thing that I went with snaps since it looks like we now have a little diaper Houdini on our hands! I also chose one of the cutest prints available on the market – Giraffe! I love this print! I chose the green just in case the next baby is a girl although a girl could wear blue. The green color is fabulous on the black. I really do love this print. It’s adorable and shouldn’t be covered up!
I also received three stay-dry inserts. The inserts are offered in three sizes (small, medium, and large) and based on W’s size I chose the medium inserts. The size chart has the small inserts best for birth-14lbs, medium for 11-22lbs, and large for 16-35lbs. Of course this all depends on the size and shape of your little one so you may find that a different size works better for you. The Stay Dry inserts consist of 4 layers of super thirsty microfiber topped with a super soft no-pill fleece pulling wetness away from baby’s bottom keeping them feeling dry. A hemp/organic cotton insert is also available.
Best Bottom also offers a doubler for night-time or for heavy wetters. I did not have the opportunity to try the doubler, but may have to look into it as a night-time possibility for us. The doubler consists of 2 layers of super thirsty microfiber and made to fit with any regular insert option of the same size. You just snap in the doubler option and snap in a regular insert of your choice on top! It sounds like such a simple solution!
I can tell you that snapping in these inserts was very simple! They fit well in the shell and I had no trouble with having to fold them or scrunch them down to get it to lay in the shell. I was worried that the fit would be off since we had the shell snapped to a smaller setting, but we were on the middle snaps and the medium inserts fit perfectly! I also like the shape of the insert and how trim it is through the middle.
Another feature I love are the leg gussets. We have never had any diaper blow-outs but just seeing gussets on a diaper makes me feel that much safer! There’s just a bit more protection there that I like. The Best Bottom gussets are very high quality and I really like them.
The trimness of this diaper system is one thing that really stands out to me. We have dealt with the fluffy bum and clothes not fitting quite right. At 6 months old, W often wears 9 or 12 month clothing to accommodate the fluffy bum and his long length. This is not such an issue with the Best Bottom system. The claims that it is a trim diaper proved to be very true in our case.
We are currently using the shell on the middle snap setting so we do have room to grow which is definitely a nice feature. With W’s growth, I’m beginning to worry that our one size diapers won’t fit him as long as he may need them! This is one diaper that we still have plenty of room to grow and with a set of the large inserts, we should be able to continue using it for quite some time.
Once the diaper was on W, it just took a few minor adjustments to make sure the insert was completely in the cover and that the gussets were in place. The gussets fit on his chunky thighs snugly without being too tight and when the diaper came off, there were no red marks left behind. This is a definitely plus for any diaper. I don’t want to put W in anything that leaves marks all over him.
Our Best Bottom system has proven to be a huge success in our house! Even J has picked it out of the drawer and put it on one day. The snaps are not as challenging as some others I have tried and it could be Best Bottom that helps me transition to using more snaps. With other diapers I have struggled to get a good fit on my chunky monkey but the placement of the Best Bottom snaps worked well for us and wandering hands that now tug on everything they touch have not been able to pull the diaper open! That is a true test!
I have also used this diaper in our diaper bag when we’re out and about running errands as mentioned in my earlier post, Using Cloth While Out and About. I love that I don’t have to pack a bunch of bulky pockets or AIOs. I can put the extra inserts in the diaper bag and have room for other things in our diaper bag! I will definitely need to invest in another shell and additional inserts when the time comes. I’m also interested in the doubler for use at night and will keep you updated if we get one! One of my biggest challenges with night-time diapering is the bulkiness and considering how trim the Best Bottom system is, I think it could be a solution for us if the doubler made it absorbent enough for us.
Last but not least, this diaper washes well. The shell dries quickly as I would expect, but the inserts also dry very quickly. When in the dryer, they are completely dry with the rest of our pocket inserts. When laying them out to dry they seem to dry even quicker than our other inserts. This is just another perk of a wonderful diapering system! I’m glad I wasn’t too afraid to give it a try! I was not disappointed!
