Later this week we will be headed on our next great family adventure. It will be the first time we fly as a family of five. Last year I flew on my own with both kids and handled it fairly well so I like to think I have this traveling with kids thing done. But there are a few Easy Family Travel Tips I’ve come to depend on when we are hitting the road (or the sky) with the kids!
Easy Family Travel Tips
So how do we prepare for our family travel adventures? Well I make sure to have all of the chargers for my electronics. I have a bit of a fear of being disconnected when traveling and needing to get in touch with someone. Yes, I’ve learned that technology is a huge help when we’re traveling with the kids so I always check and double check that I have everything to make that happen!
And while there are lots of little details that go into packing for a big trip, there are a few big things to keep in mind to make your family travel easier!
Take Your Time
One of the things I’ve learned is often the difference between a good trip and a challenging trip with the kids is time. If you plan to give yourself extra time to do anything, you’ll keep the pressure and stress levels low. I know my kids feed off of my stress so anything I can do to keep it mellow is great. Giving ourselves plenty of time to get where we need to go is one of the most important things.
And be ready to enjoy the small moments. They may not be planned but they may end up being the most memorable!
Give Yourself a Break
This could look like a lot of different things depending on what stage of parenthood you’re in. When W was young and I was cloth diapering, when we traveled with him I gave myself a break and used disposable diapers so I didn’t have to think about packing and caring for my cloth diapers. Now that he’s almost completely potty trained, I will admit that I’m planning on bringing some pull-ups for when we’re flying. I cannot imagine trying to deal with spur of the moment potty needs while on a plane with a toddler and a baby.
Be Ready to Entertain
Being prepared to keep the kids busy is obviously extremely important when you’re traveling. Without all of their usual toys, new and unfamiliar environments, and adventures like take off and landing, a child can get easily overwhelmed. So I like to pick up a few new surprises to stash away from them.
So most of the space in our backpack is full of things to keep the kids entertained. Now that W is older, I can pack far less as long as I have a tablet with us. With so many toddler-friendly apps available these days, it’s really all I need to keep him busy. It’s definitely a nice option to have these days!
Focusing on these basics really help make traveling with the kids a bit easier. I find that if I go into it with the right mindset, I actually enjoy the adventure much more!
