The holiday season is in full swing and while it’s one of my favorite times of the year, it can also be one of the most stressful times of the year. There are so many places to go and people to see. Everyone seems to be out and about too. We’ve been trying to slow it down a bit and find easy ways to enjoy the holidays at home.
I want to make memories with my family during this time of the year. Taking time for ourselves as a family is how I make sure we’re doing that. Doing simple things at home, whether the kids are home or I’m just home alone, is one of the best ways I’ve found to keep myself in the holiday spirit that I love.
ENJOY THE HOLIDAYS AT HOME
With so much running around happening during the holidays, spending time at home is precious. I love being at our house when it’s all decorated and lit up for Christmas.
But I’m on a mission to enjoy the entire season this year, so I’m focused on enjoying these easy ways to enjoy the holidays at home. They’re little things that we can do that help us stay in a festive mood but don’t cause more stress.
So start your holiday celebrations at home with these simple ideas.
Bake a sweet treat.
Baking is another thing I love to do during the holidays and I’ve passed the tradition (and my sweet tooth) on to my daughter. So we’ll usually find ourselves baking small batches of cookies throughout the month of December. We enjoy a few and then send them to school or to work with Justin.
Take a break from the holiday food.
As much as I love indulging in all of the foods usually served during the holidays, sometimes one of the best things I can do during this time of year is take a break from all of it. I love turkey, mashed potatoes, and stuffing with cranberry sauce. LOVE IT.
But sometimes I just need something a bit different. Gorton’s Shrimp Bowls are perfect when you’re craving different flavors during the holiday season but you still need something easy to eat on the busiest of days.
We’ve fallen in love with both flavors of the new Gorton’s Shrimp Bowls. You can get Stir Fry with Soba Noodles or Black Garlic & Wine Risotto! Talk about packing the flavor!
Both varieties are perfect for lunch or an easy dinner during the busy holiday season. The flavors will give you a break from some of the more traditional foods you might be eating. Gorton’s Shrimp Bowls are single serving size and are complete meals in a single bowl.
You can pick them up in the frozen food section the next time you’re grocery shopping and then pop one in the microwave when you’re craving a delicious meal. Pop your favorite variety in the microwave and in less than 6 minutes, you will have a great meal to enjoy!
Turn on some holiday tunes.
Christmas music is one of my favorite things. I was a little excited when satellite radio had Christmas music stations after Halloween. Whether we’re working around the house, cooking in the kitchen, or decorating, Christmas music is on at our house this time of year.
Playing some of your favorite songs this time of year is an easy way to feel festive. Or you can stop and take a little dance break with the kids for some simple fun together.
Wrap a few gifts.
When I wrap gifts a few at a time, I really get into the holiday mood. I figured out a few years ago that doing it in small batches turned gift wrapping into a fun activity rather than a chore. So if you’re looking for a way to do a little celebrating while you’re at home, break out all the fun wrapping paper and bows. Or design some of your own wrapping paper!
Make hot chocolate.
If you’re looking for a fun treat to enjoy during movie night or while reading books together, making hot chocolate is a very simple way to enjoy the holidays at home. You can make it as elaborate as you want with a hot cocoa bar of flavors and toppings. Or learn how to make homemade hot chocolate on the stove top.
If you need a sweet pick me up, making a cup of hot cocoa in the microwave and topping it with some peppermint whipped cream is pretty much perfection. I sit down near the Christmas tree and just let myself take a few moments to enjoy everything that this busy holiday season brings.
Make a holiday craft.
Crafting is one of our favorite things to do, no matter what time of the year. But when I want to do something fun with the kids, pulling out the supplies to make a Christmas craft is one of the things we do a few times every holiday season. Our Paper Plate Christmas Tree is a fun craft that we make every year!
Decorate a small area.
Decorating is something we start pretty early in our house. But it’s one of the best ways for me to get in the holiday mood. If I’m having a day where I need a little cheer, choosing a small area of the house and getting out a few decorations seems to lift my spirits.
Have a movie night or even a movie marathon.
If you need a relaxing break from all of the commitments, popping a holiday movie in and settling down on the couch with a bowl of popcorn is a great way to celebrate the season while also slowing things down.
We have a basket of holiday DVDs that we get out on Thanksgiving. We watch them all through December. Sometimes on a whim and sometimes we plan movie marathons for those chilly weekend nights.
Read a holiday book together.
Another holiday tradition that helps us enjoy the holidays at home is a Christmas book tradition. We have a collection of holiday books that I wrap individually each year and put near the tree. Each night the kids choose one to unwrap and then we read it together.
It’s a very simple thing but it’s become one of the things our family does during Christmas. The kids look forward to reading the books each year and seeing what order they’ll be unwrapped in. On Christmas Eve they open a brand new book that gets added to our collection.
