Whether you’re planning field day activities to do at school or at home, these field day games are easy and fun for kids of all ages!
As a former teacher and now a mom, once the weather starts warming up, I start thinking about getting the kids outside as much as possible. Having a field day is something most elementary schools plan but it’s also a great idea for a family day together!
Field day game ideas don’t have to be complicated! Keep it simple and you’ll have a ton of fun with the kids!
FIELD DAY GAMES
I’m excited to share some of our favorite field day game ideas with you because we love spending time out in our backyard together! My kids love field day at school but when they’re bored at home and the weather is gorgeous, there’s nothing like announcing that we’re having a family field day at home!
Outdoor Field Day Games
Field Day is usually all about getting outside and getting active. Whether your kids are participating in school or the whole family is in the backyard, outdoors is the place to be!
Oh, and if you’re planning a summer party, having a field day is the perfect party theme! This list has everything you need to get everyone active and having fun outside!
Some of the field day games that you should definitely consider playing are:
- Football Throw – With a football and a hula hoop, you have another easy game to play. You don’t have to set the hoop up for the kids to throw through unless you want to do that. For younger kids, it works well to just lay the hula hoop on the ground.
- Limbo – This is one of the easiest field day games to set up. All you need is something to use as a limbo stick!
- Parachute Popcorn – A fun game to play if you have a good number of kids is popcorn. You don’t have to have an actual parachute to play either. You can use a flat bed sheet and a ball to pop away! See how many times the kids can pop the ball up without it falling off the parachute!
- Pool Noodle Baseball – For a safe way to play a version of baseball, cut pool noodles in half and have the kids use them as bats. Beach balls make great balls for this silly version of America’s pastime!
- Ice Pop Break – This isn’t a field day game, but it is one of the most important field day activities, especially if it’s a hot day out. Have ice pops for the kids to enjoy. They can take a break, enjoy and treat and drink some water too!
- Hula Hoop Agility – Use hula hoops to create an obstacle course for the kids to go through. You can lay them out like tires and have the kids step in each one, have the kids hula hoop a certain number of times or use it to jump through a certain number of times. You can create so many different obstacles with just a bunch of hula hoops!
- Beach Ball Run or Relay – Have each child place a beach ball between their knees and hop to the finish line or to their teammate and then they take the next turn.
- Ping Pong Ball Spoon Race – The classic version of this game uses a real egg, but you can use a ping pong ball or even a plastic egg. Children race while carrying the ball or egg in a spoon. For older kids, you can have them carry the spoon in their mouths!
- Outdoor Twister – So this idea isn’t the easiest though it is pretty simple. It’s a great field day station and a perfect game to play with your family. Use yard paint to paint a Twister board on a patch of grass. You can create a circle template out of a cardboard box. Cut a circle in the bottom and use it to create the spacing for your game board!
Water Games for Field Day
No field day is complete without a few water games.
If you’re at home, you can even plan an entire day of water activities for kids!
Sponges and water balloons are mostly all you need! Oh, and a willingness to get a little wet!
Some of our favorite water games for field day include:
- Sponge Toss Game – Each team of kids needs two buckets and a large sponge. One bucket is filled with water and the other is empty. The team passes the wet sponge over their heads to the end of the line with the empty bucket to squeeze the water in. The first team to fill the empty bucket wins! (You can also time this event and the team with the most water transferred wins.)
- Water Balloon Toss – This one is pretty easy to do as well, especially if you use the easy to fill, self-sealing water balloons. Have the kids work in partners. They stand across from each other and toss the water balloon back and forth. Each time they successfully catch it, have them take a step back from each other!
- Water Balloon Roll – Each person gets a water balloon for this race. Everyone rolls it across the ground and the person who rolls their balloon the farthest before it pops is the winner!
- Fill the Bucket – You can play this game with sponges or with water balloons. If you use sponges, have a larger container full of water. Kids have to fill their sponge with water and run to the empty bucket. The first person or team to fill their bucket wins. If you use water balloons, the kids get a water balloon and run across to their bucket, popping it to fill the bucket.
Supplies for Field Day Ideas
There are some basic supplies that are used a lot during field day games. With these common items, you can design so many different field day activities for your kids!
- Sidewalk chalk
- Water balloons
- Balls of different sizes
- Cups
- Buckets
- Sponges
- Hula hoops
So, don’t let the idea of planning field day activities scare you! By focusing on simple ideas, you can keep it easy for yourself and the kids will love you!
They love getting outside and playing, so as long as you keep that your focus, you’re going to have an amazing time!
For even more fun in the sun, you can also try some fun kids sprinkler games and activities!
