When I’m grocery shopping, I read labels. I started doing it before my kids were born when I was on a weight loss journey.
The habit has continued as I’ve become a mom, but I find myself looking for different things now than I did ten years ago.
It can be a tricky thing to do while I’m grocery shopping. Sometimes I feel like I just need to have food labels explained to me. I know I’m not the only person in the grocery store that wants to know more about food and nutrition.
The Enough Movement is a global study that was done to learn more about people’s attitudes and beliefs about food and nutrition.
The study found that many people around the world are interested in food and nutrition. Confusion about food labels was something that was mentioned by many.
So, I know I’m not the only armed with a grocery list, just trying to do my best to understand without having food labels explained.
What do labels like organic, all natural, and no hormones added really mean? As a parent, I want to know.
Food Labels Explained for Parents
When we get food labels explained, we can see that there is more to our food than just labeling them “good” or “bad”.
I’ve got five things that parents should know about food labels. While there is a lot we can learn, these labels are the ones I question the most.
So many of us want to purchase organic food for our family because we’ve labeled it as some of the “good” food.
The truth is that organic doesn’t mean pesticide free. To be classified as organic, organic production rules and regulations must be followed.
The organic label means that synthetic chemicals and pesticides were not used. It doesn’t mean anything in terms of nutrition or how healthy the food is.
No Added Hormones
Hormones are a topic that I know I’ve had on my mind. I’ll admit that I’m one of the people who assumed that the “no added hormones” label meant hormone-free.
This isn’t true because hormones naturally occur in animals. Hormones aren’t used at all in pork and poultry products because they don’t work.
So the label “no added hormones” does not mean hormone-free. It really just means that there were no hormones added.
The Natural Label
The truth is that the US FDA doesn’t have a technical definition for “natural.”
But for a food to be labeled as “natural,” it cannot contain:
- added color
- artificial flavors
- synthetic substances
If it is a meat product it must also be minimally processed.
It’s important for us all to remember that hunger and poor nutrition is a global problem. 800 million people around the world suffer from hunger. More than 2 billion suffer from undernourishment and a lack of micronutrients.
We want to know what’s in our food so that we can make good choices for our families.
