This Kelly Marie Tran Interview is part of my coverage of the #TheLastJediEvent I attended on behalf of Disney. This post is sponsored, but all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Thank you to Disney and Louise (MomStart.com) for the photos.
Meet Kelly Marie Tran
Kelly Marie Tran is the first Asian-American woman to star in a Star Wars movie. This alone is an amazing thing for girls everywhere who are going to see STAR WARS: The Last Jedi.
Even more amazing is the character that she plays. Kelly Marie Tran plays Rose Tico, a maintenance worker who turns into a Resistance hero in The Last Jedi.
This is important for many reasons. One is that Rose Tico could be any of us. Kelly shared her thoughts on this with us:
I would like to hope that in some way… this character is such an example of… someone who doesn’t necessarily belong in this world. She works in maintenance. She works behind pipes all day. She’s not a star pilot. She’s… She doesn’t have magical powers. She’s not a princess. She’s someone who is just an every woman, essentially.
Even more specifically, she’s now poised to be a strong female Asian role model so it was something we had to ask about.
“I thought about that a lot. And it feels like such an honor, but also a lot of pressure. This idea that… I mean, I knew what it was like to grow up in a world where I never saw myself in anything.”
Kelly Marie Tran’s Journey to Star Wars
She was still working her day job when she found out that she got the role. She was so scared when they told her. She was “treading water for so long” that it never felt like she would actually get there.
There was a feeling of “there’s no way I’m going to get this job” that sort of followed her through the entire process.
She said that it was actually a freeing thing for her. It allowed her to just have fun with it.
The audition process lasted five months and the final audition was done in full hair and makeup. The whole time she didn’t think she would get it even until the end.
But she’d never thought about what might happen when she got there. I’m excited that we got to interview her before the movie comes out because it’s here! She’s made it! I also loved how she got emotional sharing the story of how she found out she got the film.
Kelly Marie Tran feels like an ordinary woman just like you and me who is seeing her dreams come true!
She traveled by herself after finishing the movie to take time for herself to process it. She wanted to figure out how to put herself out there.
She didn’t want to just be part of the noise and also had fear of being seen.
She wants to try to be herself and open and unapologetic about who she is!
This is why I think Kelly Marie Tran is going to be an amazing role model for our girls!
I always knew what I wanted. I always believed in it. I always believed that… If you work hard and you’re a good person, you will get where you want to go. I always believed that. But experiencing it is a whole different thing.
Oh, and her lightsaber would be orange because it’s her favorite color!
I feel like that makes sense! Orange is a bright color that just feels full of energy and optimism, talking with Kelly Marie Tran gave me the same feeling!
I cannot wait to finally see her as Rose Tico in The Last Jedi!
