One of my favorite things about fall is that the weather finally starts to cool down. There is just something about the smell of a crisp fall day that makes me smile and want to get outside! The kids love to go to local parks in the fall and I love getting out and exploring our neighborhood. Nature walks are one of my favorite things to do, and this time of year is perfect for some of our favorite fall nature walk ideas.
Fall Nature Walk Ideas
One of the best things about these fall nature walk ideas is that they don’t require much planning at all, but they do add a bit of a twist to an ordinary walk outside. It’s easy to get the kids outside and active every single day with these ideas! You can even take a nature walk with no plans at all and your family will have a great time. There’s just something about being outside in the fall.
Kids love nature and you can encourage them to get moving and let their curious little minds explore while you all enjoy the season with these fall nature walk ideas!
We live in an older neighborhood and have tons of old trees, which makes it fun to watch for birds while we’re out walking. We count how many birds we see along the walk. We also talk about the different types of birds we see. In our family, you score bonus points if you see an owl or a bird’s nest! Cardinals are my favorite birds to watch for and Weston loves spotting Blue Jays!
Collect as many different leaves as you can. Be sure to look for different sizes, colors, and textures. We take a small basket or bucket with us to collect them. It’s been a learning process for both the kids and me. Teaching them not to grab every single leaf, but instead to look for ones that are in good shape and different from the others has kept us busy on many walks together!
When you get home, you can sort them by size and color. Then you can use them as paint brushes to paint on canvas or paint the leaves themselves! You can also do the same activities with pine cones!
My kids love bugs and insects so we like to turn our walks into insect hunts. They have fun turning over rocks and looking around trees to see how many different living creatures they can find. I’m not the biggest fan of creepy crawlers but I do love watching the joy of my children as they explore!
One thing I’ve started doing with Weston is paying attention to the places in nature where animals and insects might make homes. We look for different places and talk about what kind of creature might live in each place. It was really interesting the night he saw a raccoon crawl out of the sewer while we were on our nature walk!
One of our fall nature walk ideas to do as a family is take a walk at night after Justin gets home from work. There are so many things to compare to the usual day walks we usually take. We compare the lights we see and the sounds we hear. We like to take time to look at the stars too. Weston just started noticing how the moon casts shadows some nights just like the sun does during the day!
Staying active, even as the weather cools down, is important for every member of the family! So use one of our fall nature walk ideas to make a commitment to be more active with your kids!
