Last year I had the opportunity to screen the pilot episode of a brand new show as part of #TheLastJediEvent #ABCTVEvent. Disney provided me with a trip to LA to cover the new show and I’m excited to finally be able to share some of what I know about The Crossing on ABC!
The Crossing on ABC
The Crossing premieres on ABC tonight (Monday, April 2nd at 10/9c) and if you like shows with a bit of mystery and intrigue, this is one you should definitely check out!
The Crossing follows the story of a local sheriff who discovers 47 bodies washed up on the shores of his small fishing town. Sheriff Jude Ellis (Steve Zahn) teams up with Department of Homeland Security agent Emma Ren (Sandrine Holt) to investigate the claims from the refugees.
They claim that they’re fleeing from a war that is happening 180 years in the future!

To make things even more interesting, Jude discovers that one of the refugees has heightened abilities that could be a threat to his town. At the same time, Emma finds out that another has information that has her questioning everything she knows about the world we all currently live in.
After screening the first episode of The Crossing, we sat down to chat with the show’s Executive Producers Dan Dworkin and Jay Beattie. We got to learn a little bit about how the show came to be, which made me even more interested in tuning in this season!

Where Did the Concept for The Crossing Come From?
Dan Dworkin shared that the concept began with a photograph. It was a photo that was shown by the press often when reporting on the Syrian refugees. The picture showed a father who had come from Syria to Greece, crossing the Mediterranean in a raft.
He’s holding his little boy and the look on the father’s face is what got to Dworkin.
He emailed Jay Beattie about the concept of refugees but also shared that they don’t usually write just straightforward dramas.
“We don’t normally write kind of straight ahead, ripped-from-the-headlines dramas.” -Dan Dwokin on The Crossing
So they figured out a way to put a spin on the refugee story and that is what we’ll see in The Crossing on ABC.

In Terms of the Story, Will Questions Be Answered Every Episode?
The Crossing is being compared to LOST because it airs on ABC and it has the mystery aspect to it. So we wanted to know if we were going to be getting answers in every episode or just more and more questions?
Dan Dworkin believes that The Crossing does have a balance where things are getting answered while more questions are being asked.
There’s a lot going on in the show and there will be a lot of questions. But they also resisted the temptation to answer too much too early. But they also don’t want us to feel cheated.
Dworkin assured us that, “we’ll be giving people enough I think, more than enough.”

Will Every Episode Have an Opening Like the First Episode?
No spoilers, I promise! But I’ll tell you that the first few minutes of the pilot episode had me hooked. I had to know what was going to happen!
So we asked if every episode would be like that.
Dan Dworkin explained that they have a term that they made up. They call it the level of whoa. WHOA.
When the sat down to look at the entire season, they knew they had to figure out a way to replicate that level of whoa from the pilot episode in every episode
While the pilot is special and has an epic feel to it that the other episodes might not match, Dworkin and Beattie feel that in terms of the ideas in the show, they definitely have the WHOA factor.
I can’t wait to see what twists and turns the creators have up their sleeve as we get deeper into the season with The Crossing.
