Stretch a Can of Cake Frosting

Over at Mommy Mishaps, my partner Danielle posted about making cake frosting go further when you’re decorating cakes. So I thought I would give it a try! I love little tricks that help stretch a dollar or two. Every little bit helps if you’re trying to save. Plus, I love cake frosting and if I have extra I always eat it! So I was hoping there might be a little extra for me!

Now I usually use whipped frosting anyway. So I was interested to see what would happen when I tried to stretch it. In my mind I’m thinking I will save even more calories if the frosting is going further. Seems logical, right?

The first thing I did was dump the frosting into a bowl. I whipped it for about 2 minutes. I don’t know if I noticed much of a difference in volume but the texture was different. It was amazingly smooth after I whipped it for a few minutes. I loved that!

I started with about 3/4 of a can of frosting before I whipped it. After I whipped it, we decorated cupcakes! I had 21 cupcakes that needed frosting. When I finished frosting all of them and put the frosting away, there was 1/2 a container left! So I’m pretty sure I increased the volume. I could just keep on decorating!

That’s not what I did though. Yes, that was me with the spoon in the frosting container!

But look at our pretty cupcakes. W decorated the one in the front (and I cleaned it up a bit to make it pretty for its photo shoot)! He wanted some of every type of sprinkles on his cupcake. Then he wanted to eat some sprinkles without the cupcake!
