When it comes to the holidays, so many of our memories and traditions revolve around food. Even with so many food options during this busy time of year, there are some dishes I find myself making every year. It’s just tradition. Side dishes are pretty important during the holidays and Slow Cooker Green Bean Casserole featuring Horizon Organic Whole Milk is a great way to put together a very traditional one!
This post was created in partnership with Horizon Organic.
SLOW COOKER GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE
Slow cooker green bean casserole is the absolute easiest way to make this classic side dish. For our family, these green beans are an absolute must for our big holiday meals. Another one of our must-haves is Slow Cooker Corn Casserole. I love that both dishes can be made in the slow cooker.
It frees up time to work on other goodies for us to enjoy or do other things together that make for festive memories.
The holidays are all about traditions.
Getting my kids in the kitchen with me is one of the things I like to do during this time of year. Whether we’re cooking or baking together, we make so many fun memories.
Cookies are a common holiday tradition, but we have traditions that revolve around all different kinds of food. From the same meal we always have on the night before (Chinese food here) to the dishes I have to have at the big holiday dinner to make it feel complete, food is pretty important during this time of year!
Green bean casserole just happens to be one of those must-have dishes for me!
GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE INGREDIENTS
Most people know the basics that go into green bean casserole and that it’s an easy recipe to double if you’re having a lot of people over for a holiday meal. I love that I’m able to incorporate organic ingredients and feel really good about making it for my family.
Horizon Organic Whole Milk is stocked in our refrigerator throughout the entire holiday season. It’s a great organic ingredient for slow cooker green bean casserole. It’s also great with cookies or making homemade hot chocolate with!
Horizon Organic Whole Milk is certified organic which means:
- No GMOs
- No antibiotics
- No added hormones
- No toxic and persistent pesticides. Note: Per NOP regulations, organic rules prohibit the use of pesticides that are harmful to human health
It also means the cows are treated humanely. I also like that it has 50% more vitamin D per serving than typical whole milk.
When you pair it with organic green beans and organic mushroom soup, you’ve got a great side dish!
If you’re looking for organic French fried onions, they are available too. You can also make your own so you can take a holiday classic and turn it into an organic side dish for your family to enjoy. It’s just a little twist on tradition that we can feel good about.
HOW TO MAKE GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE IN THE SLOW COOKER (FEATURING HORIZON ORGANIC WHOLE MILK)
This is a simple recipe and if you’re looking to get the kids involved in the kitchen to start the tradition of cooking together, this is a great recipe to use! The preparation is easy and once it’s in the slow cooker, you can leave it and work on other things.
I love using my casserole slow cooker to make side dishes like these organic green beans, but you can also use your favorite round slow cooker too. If you’re using a round slow cooker, I recommend using Slow Cooker liners to make clean up even easier too. But otherwise, you can use cooking spray to make sure the casserole doesn’t stick to the side of the crock.
Another important thing to do is to make sure that your green beans are well-drained before adding them to the soup mixture. Then the recipe is pretty much a dump and drop recipe that your family and friends will love to share as you all sit down at the table together this year.

CELEBRATING WITH HOLIDAY TRADITIONS
We pair our Slow Cooker Green Bean casserole with our other favorite side dishes each year. The meal just doesn’t feel complete without corn pudding, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce! It’s also not complete without all of our family.
As if it wasn’t enough that this recipe is easy to make and delicious, it also works great for transporting on the go. If one of your family’s traditions is to go to someone else’s house for the big holiday meal, this casserole is the perfect side dish to take with you.
It travels well in the slow cooker and then you can plug it in when you arrive to keep it warm. So if you need an easy dish to bring to your dinner tradition, be sure to save this one!
Sitting down around the table at my mother-in-law’s house is one of my favorite holiday traditions.
Another of my favorite traditions is enjoying my mother-in-law’s holiday candy. She makes homemade candy every year. We’ve built our own tradition at home based on hers and we make our own cookies each year to share with our friends and family.
Enjoying our cookies with Horizon Organic Whole Milk is one of those perfect pairings for the holiday season!
Get your family traditions started as the holiday season is just around the corner!
