Chocolate Playdough Recipe
Most people won’t think of brown playdough as a must-have color, but it’s actually great for a few different ideas!
This Hot Chocolate Playdough is one of the cutest ideas we’ve had in awhile. It’s great for class parties with a theme (we made it to go along with a Polar Express themed activity at school) or just for fun at home on a snowy day!
You can pair it with a cup of hot cocoa or put together a hot cocoa bar and let everyone make their own cup. They can sip while they play with their playdough!
Chocolate Playdough Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup salt
- 2 Tablespoons cream of tartar
- 1 Tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1-2 envelopes hot cocoa powder
- 1 cup water
- 1 Tablespoon vegetable oil
This playdough is technically safe to eat, but I’d encourage the kids not to try it. It may smell amazing but it doesn’t taste great at all.
In addition to the ingredients to make the playdough itself, you might want to get a few other things to make it feel more like a cup of hot chocolate!
- Styrofoam or insulated cup
- White pom poms (for pretend marshmallows)
- Spoons
- Chocolate sprinkles (this adds a fun sensory experience to the playdough)

How to Make Brown Playdough
- Add the flour, salt, and cream of tartar to a medium mixing bowl. Whisk to blend and set aside.
- In a medium saucepan, add the water and oil. Stir well to mix both ingredients.
- Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and whisk until the dough is no longer lumpy.
- Place the pan over medium heat, stirring constantly, until a stiff ball of dough forms (about 2 minutes). The dough will look like mashed potatoes.
- Remove from the heat and allow to cool for 2 minutes.
- Knead the dough for about 5 minutes or until it is soft and pliable. Enjoy the awesome aroma of rich chocolate as you work your fingers through the hot chocolate playdough.
This cocoa-flavored playdough will give your kids hours of creative fun play as they shape the playdough inside cups and top with marshmallows (white pom poms).
You can store the Hot Chocolate Playdough in a zipper bag or an airtight container for a few weeks.

Chocolate playdough is great for pretending you’re having hot chocolate, but it also works great for a few other fun ideas:
- Roll it out and use cookie cutters to pretend you’re baking cookies.
- Use it to make a spring craft. The playdough can be the dirt in a pot of flowers.
- Works well as mud playdough too. Play with toy trucks or bugs for some mud fun that’s not quite as messy.
- Pair with white or pink playdough to make ice cream cones!
So if you’re looking for other uses for brown chocolate playdough, it’s a great recipe to keep in your back pocket and use throughout the year!
In the winter, we also love making glittery snow playdough since we don’t get snow often around here!
