MUST-HAVE DOG CAR ACCESSORIES
Taking the dogs around our area to explore makes it even more fun. They enjoy it as much as we do. But riding with three adults, two kids, and two dogs in the van can be a little crazy without good dog car accessories!
I’ll admit that I learned that lesson the difficult way!
But it only takes once for me to learn from my mistakes and make some simple changes for the better. Now we’re better prepared for traveling with the dogs.
It’s kind of a theme in my life. Making plans and having to adjust them. It even happened when we adopted Toby!
National Dog Day is on August 26th and Autotrader is partnering with Adopt-a-Pet to celebrate with their new site — Dogtrader.com! Pet adoption has been a huge part of my life so I love this partnership!
For as long as I can remember, we’ve had a dog. When Justin and I got married and moved into our townhome, it only took a few weeks before I knew something was missing.
I knew we needed a dog.
So the hunt began. I knew we were going to adopt and I was on the lookout for a Boston terrier. I was willing to wait a little bit and I looked into a number of different resources since I was looking for a specific breed.
When I found out that a local dog adoption was going to have a Boston terrier, I headed out to the adoption event. When I got there to see the dog, they told me that the person who had taken him for a trial was planning on adopting him. So there was no Boston terrier to be seen.
Enter Toby.
As Grambo and I wandered around the adoption event looking at dogs, there was one. The one who had eyes of love. Who just watched us and sat so sweetly in his crate. That was the look that called to me. The one that had me holding him in my arms.
He rested his head on my mom’s shoulder and the deal was sealed.
Toby had claimed us and there was no going back.
I sent Justin a picture and made it official. We had our first pet together! Now it’s ten years later and I cannot imagine life without Toby.

CHOOSING CAR ACCESSORIES FOR DOGS
When it comes to dog car accessories, safety is key. Just like I want to keep my kids safe in the car, I want to keep the dogs safe too!
But I also want to minimize the cleanup I have to do after the dogs have taken a trip in the car!
So there are three must-have car accessories for dogs to make hitting the road easier.
- dog seat covers
- dog car harness
- dog car crate or carrier
With these dog car travel accessories, everyone can have a more enjoyable ride. And if you’re adopting a new pup, you want that first ride to be a wonderful memory!
DOG CAR SEAT COVERS
Pet seat covers are one of the best things a pet owner can discover! You can get them in different sizes and materials. They have dog car seat covers that are similar to laying a blanket over the seat (but they stay in place) or hammock style seat covers! You can also get them in a variety of colors to match the interior of your vehicle!
These have to be one of my favorite car accessories for dogs and I’m not sure what took me so long to discover them! It keeps things cleaner in the car when we’re on the road.
DOG CAR SEATBELT
I want the dogs to be safe if we’re in an accident, so using a dog car restraint when we’re on an adventure has become really important to me. They help prevent your dog from moving freely around the vehicle or jumping out of open windows. They come in a variety of sizes and styles so there is one for every dog.
Dog car travel accessories like a seatbelt or restraint are also helpful because they keep me from being distracted while I’m driving.
DOG CAR CARRIER
Most car carriers are designed for smaller dogs but they also make dog car crates for bigger dogs. My dogs like to use a harness or seatbelt so they can see out the windows while we’re driving but I know some dogs feel safer in their own space. This makes a crate or carrier a great option for their safety and to reduce distracted driving!
