Family Reading Night Ideas to Help Bring Books to Life
One of the most important things to me as a mom and former teacher is reading. I know that by simply reading with our kids, we’re helping them learn to read and develop a love for reading.
The summer can be a bit more challenging. We’ve got an easy reading routine during the school year but summer is very relaxed. I’ve found that planning family reading night activities is a great way to make reading part of our summer fun!
While we read together almost every night, it’s been fun to plan a night together. The kids help me plan family reading night ideas and we have a few favorites!
Favorite Books Families Read Together
One of the easiest family reading night ideas we’ve discovered is choosing some of our favorite books to share each time.
Every family reading night, we each choose a current favorite book from our collection of children’s books. I find the books families read together often become childhood favorites!
Here’s a list of some of our favorites, including our affiliate link in case you need to get a copy for your family!
Family Reading Games
We also love playing games that are related to the books we read together. Sometimes we play games online and sometimes we play board games or other reading games.
Some of the games we like to play include:
- Sight word hunt – We look for sight words as we read our favorite books
- Boggle Junior
- Starfall.com & ABCya! (when we feel like sitting together with them and playing to keep it a family activity)
We’ve even been known to color together! It’s fun to hang out with the kids and draw pictures from the books we read together. And it’s easy to plan for — all you need is some paper and some crayons!
If you want to get a little more involved in planning, you can find so many crafts to go along with popular children’s books too! We like to make our Easy Truffula Tree craft when we read The Lorax together!
Bringing Reading to Life
I taught first grade for many years and then taught in the computer lab so I know how important technology is to kids. Bringing technology and reading together is a great way to get them engaged.
One of the newest ways we’ve brought technology into our family reading night activities is with Pai Storybooks. TJ & the Beanstalk is a 3D Augmented Reality Storybook from Pai Technology. You can use your smartphone or tablet to unlock adventures on every single page!
All we had to do was download the app and get out our copy of TJ & the Beanstalk. It’s not you ordinary storybook!
Pai Storybook 3D Fairy Tales for Children’s Book, TJ & the Beanstalk, Hardcover
The book brings the story to life for all of us. If you find it challenging to get your child excited about reading, adding technology into the mix can definitely help.
It’s really gotten Weston (and Carrigan) excited about opening up the book. They’ve loved the 3D effects and actually ask to read it on their own. They have their own tablets and I’ve caught them with TJ & the Beanstalk out even when I’m not reading with them!
You can order your own copy of TJ & the Beanstalk on Amazon! Use the code PaiBooks to save 15%! Don’t forget to download the free app so you can bring your story to life!
This fall two more books are coming out, so watch for TJ & his Magical Garden and TJ & his Team of Heroes!
If you’re looking for ways to keep your kids reading all summer long, make it family time! Take a few easy family reading night ideas and plan some time together! It’s like movie night but focused on books!
And in some books families read together and some fun things like games and technology! You could even start a new family tradition and keep them going into the school year!
