First Day of Kindergarten Celebration Ideas

This post may contain affiliate links view our disclosure

Weston is headed to school this year so we’re planning some fun First Day of Kindergarten celebration ideas to make the milestone one that is full of great memories. This post is part of a partnership with Gift Card Mall and we thank them for inspiring us to turn our new adventure into a celebration!

Plan a First Day of Kindergarten celebration or two! Make the day special!

First Day of Kindergarten Celebration Ideas

So I have to admit that I’m going to be the crying mom on the first day of school. I will do my best to hold it in until I’m back in the car, but I have a feeling it’s going to happen.

Until then, I’m focusing on some fun ways that our family can celebrate this milestone together! But don’t let the word celebrate send your mind spiraling into crazy party planning mode. There are some easy ideas that will make the first day and the first week special.

    Night Before School Starts Dinner

This year we’re starting a brand new tradition — going out to dinner the night before school starts. When I told Weston he could choose a restaurant to go out to the night before Kindergarten, he was thrilled! It’s an easy to plan first day of Kindergarten celebration that gives us the chance to enjoy a meal together as a family without anyone having to spend the evening in the kitchen!

It’s a simple thing to do but a great way to let your child know that you’re excited and want to celebrate the first day of school!

    First Day of School Gift

At the end of the first day of preschool, I gave Weston a greeting card with a little note and a few dollars. It was to congratulate him on being brave and doing a great job on his first day. It’s a tradition I plan to keep up with every year. The gifts will definitely change as he grows.

This year, Gift Card Mall made it easy for me to put together a gift for him. He’s a huge fan of being able to go shopping and pay on his own. So being able to pick up a gift card from Gift Card Mall at our local grocery store or online at www.giftcardmall.com makes gift giving so easy for me!

Have a First Day of Kindergarten celebration with a little gift at the end of the day! Free printable!

This year I decided to do an easy card that I could print and attach his gift card to. I knew if I gave Weston a gift, then Carrigan would expect the same on her first day so this makes it easy!

Choosing a First Day of School Outfit

One tradition that Grambo always did with my sister and I was going shopping for a new outfit for the first day of school. It’s a back to school tradition that is great for all ages. Even if you don’t need a lot of new clothes for the school year, a new outfit for the new school year is something special.

So Weston went shopping and chose two new shirts and a pair of shorts. He couldn’t decide between the shirts and said he’s going to wear them both. We’ll see how that turns out!

    Reading The Night Before Kindergarten

When I was a teacher, I had a huge children’s book collection. I taught first grade and on the first day of school we would always read The Night Before First Grade by Natasha Wing. She has some for the elementary grades and Weston got a copy of The Night Before Kindergarten as a preschool graduation gift. So we read it the night before school started!

It was a great book for our family story time we’ve put into action to help him with his reading skills! Family time and making his teacher happy! Done and done!

So I know it can be emotional and a big change, but if you plan a First Day of Kindergarten celebration or two, it will be a day for the memory books! Don’t forget your cameras so you have plenty of reminders to look back on when the kids are all grown and off to their first day of college! What? You know it will be here before you know it!
