How to Make Soft Playdough
I look forward to spending winter break with my kids. I love having them home but I’ll be honest, that last week or so usually has me scrambling to keep them busy.
If I don’t keep them busy they start to get on each other’s nerves. The newness of their holiday gifts has mellowed out and they start missing their friends, swim lessons, and dance classes.
That puts the pressure on me to keep them engaged! One of the easiest things I’ve figured out is how to make homemade soft playdough!
Make Your Own Playdough
This cloud dough recipe works great during winter break because it’s soft, light, and fluffy. You can leave it a white color (depending on the conditioner you use), color it blue, or let the kids choose a color! Then you just have to get started and make your own playdough!
The materials list is a short one and you might even have everything you need in your house right now!
Soft Playdough Recipe Ingredients
You only need two or three ingredients to make your own playdough!
- Cornstarch
- Conditioner
- Food coloring (optional)
How to Make Homemade Playdough
It only takes a few minutes to put together this homemade playdough recipe. It’s all safe for the kids to help with.
If you don’t mind risking a bit of a mess, they can do everything from the first step to the last step.
To keep it a bit cleaner, an adult can mix the conditioner and cornstarch playdough until it’s mixed well.
STEP 1. Measure cornstarch into a large mixing bowl.
You’ll use about two parts cornstarch to one part conditioner.
Step 2. Add conditioner to cornstarch.
When I make a batch of homemade playdough for both kids to play with, I start with two cups of cornstarch and one cup of conditioner.
Once you add the conditioner, mix it well.
Step 3. If you want to add color to your homemade playdough, add until you get the desired color.
I always mix with a mixing spoon until we get the color we want. Once it’s all mixed in, it doesn’t get on hands. But if you let little hands get in the bowl before it’s worked in, you might have some colored fingers!
Step 4. Mix with your hands.
Once the food coloring is mixed in, it’s safe to start mixing with your hands!
As you mix it, the dough will start to stick together and become a fun, moldable homemade playdough!
Step 5. Have fun!
You might just find yourself wanting to play with this easy conditioner playdough with your kids too!
If you want to use the playdough more than once, be sure to store it in an airtight container!
The great thing about this recipe for playdough is that we usually have everything we have to make it around the house.
Between the pantry and the bathroom, I can usually find enough cornstarch and conditioner to put together a batch!
