How to Choose a Dog Kennel

    Family Life

When we first got our dogs, they were kennel trained but over the years, I’ll admit one has started sleeping in the bed. Our Boston Terrier, Sebastian, is not a dog who enjoys spending the night in a bed with any of us. He’s all about his kennel and that means it was time for me to learn about how to choose a dog kennel to make sure he has what he needs!

This post is sponsored by Petmate but the content and opinions expressed here are my own. Huge thanks to Petmate for helping me get educated on choosing the best dog kennel for our dogs!

HOW TO CHOOSE A DOG KENNEL

For a while, I’ve known that Sebastian probably needed a new dog kennel. He uses his kennel so often that I want him to have the space he needs, but I wasn’t sure where to start. Did I just buy one a bit bigger than his current one? What material should we get?

We’ve been debating taking a road trip before school resumes and the dogs would be coming with us. That added another question to my list about how to choose the right kennel for my dog.

I want this little guy to have what he needs to be safe and comfortable.

So many things to consider and to figure out! With help from Petmate, I decided to sit down and make a list of the important things we wanted in a new dog kennel before diving into the details of dog kennel sizes. I figured knowing the features that were important to us would help us narrow down our choices.

It was easy to narrow down what we look for in a dog kennel:

    • Comfort
    • Safety
    • Durability
    • Appropriate for Traveling

I want Sebastian to have a comfortable place to feel safe that is safe for him. I also want it to last and I wanted to get a new dog kennel that could travel with us.

Oh, and I also wanted it to be easy to clean. We’ve had some kennels in the past that were such a pain to keep clean.

    DOG KENNEL COMFORT AND SAFETY

We have used wire kennels in the past but as I read more about plastic kennels, I knew that we wanted to make the change. Plastic kennels like the ones available from Petmate are a safe alternative.

They are designed to minimize sharp edges while also being designed to be strong, safe, and tough. They protect both the pet and the home! They’re also rust-resistant which is something I never considered in my home, but we have had old kennels start to rust.

So I knew the plastic kennels would have the durability factor I was looking for.

Sebastian has the natural desire to have a space of his own where he feels safe and secure. Our new plastic kennel fro Petmate fosters that instinct to be snug and comfortable.

He had zero trouble moving into his new plastic kennel and making it his own!

    DOG KENNELS & TRAVEL

Now that the kids are older, we’ve been discussing some road trips we’ve always wanted to go on. Some of these include trips we can take the dogs on too. I dream of all the memories we could make with our whole family on the road together.

The shape and durability of plastic kennels make them a safe way to travel with your pet. Petmate plastic kennels are compliant with air and highway travel requirements.

It’s a huge peace of mind for me as we start to plan some adventures together. I also like having an easy way to transport Sebastian shorter distances like to the vet or to visit family.

    Plot twist time!

While Sebastian is our dog who loves having a kennel at home, Toby has never been a huge fan. We had one for him when he was younger, but as he got older, he rarely used it on his own.

From time to time, I will find that he’s snagged a spot in Sebastian’s bed in his dog kennel though.

Ever since we got our Petmate 32″ Ulta Vari Kennel, Toby has been snagging a spot in the bed more and more often!
