When thinking about places we might like to visit with our kids, I’ve heard great things about Pittsburgh. Some of our friends recently moved back to Texas after living in the Pittsburgh area for a few years after a job transfer. They’ve only had great things to say about it.
The city is a great place to raise kids. It’s a center of educational innovation and excellence due to all of the museums, schools, libraries, and afterschool programs.
It’s no surprise to me that Pittsburgh was recently selected by HundrED to spotlight the innovations in education that are happening in the area. I’m thrilled to be able to share more about what this means for kids!
PITTSBURGH’S INNOVATIONS IN EDUCATION
Pittsburgh is home to educators who have been pushing the limits of learning, taking risks, and reaching higher. Under the banner of Remake Learning, the area now has a high concentration of educational innovations that have the potential to help our children soar.

SUMMER DREAMERS ACADEMY IN PITTSBURGH
One of the innovations in education from Pittsburgh is the Summer Dreamers Academy.
Did you know that students can lose about two month’s work of math skills over summer break? The research shows this is true for all students, no matter their income level. For low-income students it can be even worse as many lose more than two months of literacy content.
In the Pittsburgh area educators are working to fight summer learning loss in an innovative way with the Summer Dreams Academy.
The program was created by the Pittsburgh Public Schools. It combines the benefits of summer school with the fun of summer camp in an effort to reduce the dreaded summer learning loss that so many of our kids face when school lets out at the end of the year.
It’s a premier summer learning experience that’s available at no-cost and is part of Pittsburgh Public School’s effort to provide a 12-month learning progression to support students in becoming life-long learners.
The program offers a mix of quality instruction by certified teachers in the morning that utilizes hands-on and engaging activities. In the afternoon the campers choose enrichment activities they’re interested in. They range from arts-related activities like mosaic making, dance, and theater to outdoor activities like biking and kayaking. If students are interested in coding or design, there are technology options too!
As part of the spotlight, HundrED chose 12 Pittsburgh-are programs to spotlight, including the Summer Dreamers Academy. The programs will be shared as models and inspiration for educational innovation around the world.
In November 2019, the Pittsburgh programs will travel to Helsinki, Finland to present their innovations at the HundrED Global Innovation Summit.
