Italian Pinwheels are the ultimate cold appetizer for parties when you want something that tastes like your favorite Italian sub. These Italian pinwheel sandwiches take just 10 minutes to put together, and the combination of salami, pepperoni, and provolone with a seasoned cream cheese spread makes them way better than plain sandwich pinwheels.

What makes these Italian sub pinwheels so perfect for entertaining is that you make them hours ahead and just slice when guests arrive. The cream cheese mixture with Italian seasoning and banana peppers gives them that authentic deli flavor everyone loves.

    Ingredients & Equipment

Youโ€™ll need these ingredients to make Italian Pinwheels:

    • Cream cheese
    • Italian seasoning
    • Garlic powder
    • Banana peppers
    • Sliced salami
    • Sliced pepperoni
    • Provolone cheese
    • Large tortillas

Full measurements for each ingredient can be found in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

Youโ€™ll also need a few things from your kitchen:

    • Measuring cups
    • Measuring spoons
    • Small bowl
    • Spoon
    • Butter knife or offset spatula
    • Plastic wrap
    • Cutting board
    • Serrated knife

    Step By Step Directions

This recipe makes 28 servings. It takes 10 minutes of prep time and 4 hours of chill time.

Step 1. Stir together the cream cheese, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and banana peppers.

Step 2. Spread a thin layer of the cream cheese mixture over the top of each tortilla.

Step 3. Place three slices of provolone cheese at the end of one of each tortilla.

Step 4. Top with four slices of salami and four slices of pepperoni.

Step 5. Roll the tortilla tightly around the filling and wrap with plastic wrap. Chill for at least 4 hours before slicing into one-inch pieces and serving.

    Variations

    • Caprese Pinwheels: Replace the salami and pepperoni with fresh mozzarella and tomatoes, and add fresh basil leaves
    • Spicy Italian: Use hot capicola instead of salami and add red pepper flakes to the cream cheese mixture
    • Veggie Italian: Skip the meat and load up with roasted red peppers, artichoke hearts, olives, and sun-dried tomatoes
    • Turkey Italian: Swap the salami for turkey and use mozzarella instead of provolone for a lighter version
    • Extra Cheese: Add a sprinkle of shredded parmesan to the cream cheese mixture for even more flavor

    Leftovers & Storage

Store leftover pinwheels in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. These actually taste better after sitting overnight because all the flavors blend together. You can also keep the unsliced wrapped rolls for up to 2 days before cutting.

    Tips & Tricks

    • Make sure your cream cheese is completely softened or it will be hard to spread evenly
    • Drain and chop the banana peppers well so they donโ€™t make the cream cheese mixture too wet
    • Layer the provolone, salami, and pepperoni only on one end of the tortilla so they donโ€™t all slide around when you roll
    • Roll the tortillas as tightly as possible without tearing them so the pinwheels hold together when sliced
    • Let them chill for the full 4 hours or theyโ€™ll fall apart when you try to cut them
    • Use a sharp serrated knife and wipe it clean between cuts for neat slices
    • If the meat is sticking together, separate the slices before layering so they distribute evenly
    • Serve these with marinara sauce on the side for dipping if you want an extra Italian touch

    Recipe FAQs

Can I use different Italian meats?

Absolutely! Prosciutto, capicola, mortadella, or even Italian sausage all work great. Use whatever Italian deli meats you like or have on hand.

What if I donโ€™t like banana peppers?

You can use pepperoncini, roasted red peppers, or just leave them out completely. The Italian seasoning and garlic powder still give plenty of flavor.

Can I make these the night before a party?

Yes! These are perfect to make ahead. Keep them wrapped tightly and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Just slice them right before serving.

What size tortillas should I use?

Use large burrito-size flour tortillas (about 10 inches). Smaller tortillas wonโ€™t give you enough room to layer all the meat and cheese.

How do I keep the filling from sliding out?

Start layering your meat and cheese about an inch from one edge, and only layer on one end of the tortilla. As you roll from that end, the filling stays in place better.

    Can these be frozen?

I donโ€™t recommend freezing these because the cream cheese and vegetables donโ€™t freeze well. The texture gets watery when thawed. Theyโ€™re best made fresh or up to a day ahead.
