A few weeks ago, I shared about the ways I’m helping my mom stay healthy in retirement. If you’re a caretaker for one or more of your parents, then you already know how many things you may find yourself doing. I’ve partnered with Amerigroup to share some of the most important things to look for in Medicare coverage when you’re caring for an aging adult.
We’re so thankful to have my mom living with us 24/7 and want her to be healthy and happy for a long time! She’s an integral part of our family life and I’m happy to be able to care for her and give back after all the years of her caring for me.
5 THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN MEDICARE COVERAGE
Learning about Medicare was one thing that Grambo and I did together as she approached retirement. We figured out what was important to her and then went looking for a Medicare Advantage Plan that offered the whole-person healthcare approach she prefers. We discovered that Amerigroup’s Medicare Advantage Plans offer some of the benefits that were at the top of my mom’s lists.
COPAYS & OUT OF POCKET EXPENSES
Copays and what our aging family members might have to pay out of pocket is very important when considering a Medicare Advantage Plan. Grambo has some regular appointments with specialists so that was an important benefit for us to research and compare.
Amerigroup makes it easy for us to get information on how much she might spend out of pocket as well as what her copays would be for both her primary care doctor and her specialist.
That made it simple for me to see what would work well in her monthly budget.
DENTAL
Grambo also wanted to find a plan that would support other areas of her healthcare. Dental care is something she has often found herself needing before retirement and now that she’s retired, that hasn’t changed.
Knowing she can have the exams and cleanings that she needs each year is great for her peace of mind and for her smile!
VISION
Vision care is another big consideration. She wants to keep her eyes healthy so she can stay active and be involved in our family life. With Amerigroup’s Medicare Advantage Plan, she could get an annual eye exam each year.
She’ll be watching the kids make memories for many years to come!
HEARING
As she’s gotten older, Grambo has been thinking more about her hearing and planning to get a hearing exam. When I saw that the Amerigroup Medicare Advantage Plan included routine hearing benefits, I knew it was a plan that can help support her whole health.
ADDITIONAL SERVICES
The thing I really like about some of Amerigroup’s Medicare Advantage Plans is that they offer access to additional services called Everyday Extras.
This past year, these plans allowed enrollees that option to choose an additional benefit (at no extra cost) that fits with individual needs. These benefit options include:
- Transportation
- Personal Home Helper
- Assistive Devices
- Healthy Food Deliveries
- Alternative Medicine
- Day Center Visits

Some of Amerigroup’s Medicare Advantage health plans are expanding on the wellness service options it introduced last year!
New services that may be available include:
- nutrition support and education
- service dog support
- pest control
Amerigroup believes that one of the best ways to help people live healthier lives is to help them access things that address everyday health needs. I couldn’t agree more! Addressing whole-person health can make it easier to manage chronic conditions and be more engaged with their community.
That sounds like a great quality of life to me and that is what I want for my mom as she enjoys her retirement years with us!
