What is a mug cake? (FAQs)

Also known as microwave cake or mug muffin, this single-serving dessert is just the right amount of sweetness to satisfy your sweet tooth. Plus being able to whip it together in less than five minutes is a plus for this busy mom.

Not only are mug cakes easy to make, but they are so easy that the kids can make them for themselves. I love that my family can enjoy this yummy dessert when I’m running around with ball practice, dance lessons, and other activities.

Do you put egg in a mug cake?

No, peanut butter mug cake has no eggs!

So, if you have an egg allergy this recipe is for you to eat! Plus, you can’t even tell that this cake is egg free!

What kind of peanut butter should I use?

I highly recommend that you use creamy, peanut butter. We are a JIF family in our house, but any brand will work.

If you prefer chunky peanut butter, you can use it and follow the same directions on the recipe card.

What kind of mug should I use?

You don’t need any special mug for this recipe. You just need one that is at least standard size and is safe for use in the microwave.

You can also use a microwave-safe ramekin.

How to Make Peanut Butter Mug Cake

You’re going to need a microwave and a microwavable mug or ramekin. Also, you will need a spoon! But that’s all you need! How simple is that? Only two dishes to wash and just a few minutes in the kitchen and you have a tasty and sweet dessert treat that is ready to eat.

    Ingredients

    • 1 tablespoon peanut butter
    • 3 tablespoons butter
    • 5 tablespoons all-purpose flour
    • 2 tablespoons sugar
    • ΒΌ teaspoon baking powder
    • 3 tablespoons milk
    • 1 peanut butter cup, chopped (optional)
Dry cake ingredients in white mug

    Step By Step Instructions

This recipe makes 1 serving. It takes about 2 minutes to prepare and less than 2 minutes to cook.

In a small bowl, add the peanut butter and butter.

Place in the microwave for 30 seconds, until melted. Stir to combine.

Add the flour, sugar, and baking powder to the mug. Stir to combine.

Then add the peanut butter mixture and milk to the mug. Stir to combine.

Heat in the microwave for 1 minute and 15 seconds.

How do I tell when a mug cake is done cooking?

The best way to tell if your mug cake is done cooking is to touch it with a clean finger.

If there’s batter on your finger, then you need to put it back in the microwave and cook for another 30 seconds. Then once again you will want to touch the top of the microwavable mug or ramekin with a clean finger.

If it feels done, then you’re ready to eat!

How to store leftover mug cake

You can store any leftover cake in an air-tight container in the refrigerator.

You can also cover it with plastic cling wrap or foil.

    How to reheat

The best way to warm up your microwavable mug or ramekin is to pour a little bit of water (less than 1/8 teaspoon) into the cup and then microwave in 10-15 second increments.

If you would like, add another 10-15 seconds if the cake is still cool in the center.
